Books on Bavaria or Hanover

Hello,

Is anyone aware of any decent books on the history of Bavaria during the Wittelsbach period (1180 - 1918), or perhaps on the Electorate of Hanover (prior to them becoming Kings of England, about which tens of books have been written)?

I am thinking of writing a book on one of the above subjects, but wondered if there is already a glut out there (though I cannot find much at all).

Could I add, that if anyone knows of any decent works on Sweden under King Charles XII I would be interested. I know there are works in Swedish but unfortunately cant speak the lingo (which is a shame, because it could come in useful with all those lovely Swedish ladies....my mind is wandering!)

Sweden holds a soft spot for me, being my first position with Richard way back when, and got me interested in the game and period. If anyone knows of any good books I would be grateful for a pointer in the right direction.

I don't have access to this information myself, however, my girlfriend's brother is currently studying for his Masters in History at the University of Bremen.

So I have just e-mailed him to see if he can get details on book titles for both subjects (in English and German).

As a side note, I am living in the old Electorate of Hannover (2 n's please!), Hannover being about an hours drive north of Bad Gandersheim. Gandersheim itself, as I have been told, was not actually part of the Electorate, but was an Imperial Free City, kind of ruled directly by the Emperor (at least in theory!), until it was eventually merged into another; I think with Braunschweig (aka Brunswick), and then absorbed into Prussia during the 19th century. I'll nail this down if anyone is interested

I hope to go and see the Electors Palace in Hannover at some point. I believe it partially survived the bombing, and was rebuilt after the war. I have seen King Frederick The Great's gardens in Potsdam. Very impressive in scale, but the German's can't do a decent lawn for toffee lol And all the time I was thinking "you know, I'm sure these gardens were built using English money" lol

As you can see most of it is in German, and even the old German script... Maybe you can find English translations, now that you have an idea on the titles.

Many thanks for that. I was just trying to get a feel for what is out there and whether there might be any demand for such books, so that's helpful. Not a problem them being in German - I used to live in the Maerkischer Kreis myself (just south of Dortmund) then spent six years in the Swiss Cantons.

What took you to Bad Gandersheim? Hope it wasn't rheumatism for the spa!

Good luck with reading the German Fraktur! I have enough trouble trying to read modern day German, let alone when its in the old German-Empire era script!

My girlfriend comes from Gandersheim, and I now work for the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Lindau (am Harz), hence the picture of the Dawn spacecraft, which is the project I am involved with.

Just wish it would stop snowing!!!

At one time (back in the 90s), I believe most books on the subject where in German, but, I believe that there area a couple in English at "Grenadier Books". And, at "Uniformology", you will find CDs of color picturers/prints of the appropriate armies! I've done business with Uniformology in the past, they're fast, reputable and, they have a great selection too!
