I have no idea I merely searched and found it but never carefully read the rest?

Maybe it is a historical thing like the Jews?

A bit of reading the net suggests they were widly not liked and every nation sought to remove them or at least stop their practices. Seems most wanted them out of the country or at best under their control and abiding by their laws and rules

Just reading these old posts to get up to speed with what came before, not having read the link however, but my maternal family is from Romany roots - it having to been easier to convert to a normal lifestyle & accomodate themselves in a brick built dwelling around the time of the Great War.

One of the members of my ancestry in this set of my roots was sentenced by an English magistrate at the local assizes to transportation to Van Demonsland (spelling no-doubt wrong Embarassed ) for stealing a loaf of bread.

You sure did get the spelling wrong - it is Van Diemen's Land - Tasmania as it is now known. Probably transported to Port Arthur - sadly I never got to visit Port Arthur during my stays on Tasmania.

My family also has a legend of one of my ancestors being transported to Tassie. As a Kentish man, he wanted to go there, so there was a conspiracy brewed up in the village. He would be stiched up by the local constabulary, for stealing a sheep, and for that the local magistrate would transport him. A nice cheap way of emigrating, so they all thought!

Anyway, Tasmania is now known as the "Apple Isle", and the family claim it is in partly due to my ancestor being transported, then once his time was done, having Kentish apple trees exported there... Who knows if the legend is true?! Sure sounds nice though!

    Smile

I'm using Wikipedia alot at the moment to help me. Alright, I'll admit I'm checking up on the information I get from there from other sites before taking it as gospel. Google comes in handy here.

    - I am editing my posts should people start wondering why some are missing or have been changed. All of the junk contained in them will be removed & the useful, hopefully, bits kept in.

I have a set of wonderful old textbooks from one of the oldest military academies in the US. One of the books comes from the late 1800s and is entitled, "The History of England"

You never know what you are going to find in my office, shop, briefcase, desk... etc!
