I have, in a couple of games. They are quite a challenge but are also good fun.

My aim is always to try and modernise their arsenals whilst at the same time trying to maintain the distinct nature of Chinese society. My aim was always to make them strong enough to see off the barbarians. I have also always put a strong focus on improving their legal, medical and admin services. In addition, I tried to build up China's foreign trade and also allowed additional foreign trade into China (very controlled however).

The biggest challenge is finding allies you feel may not take advantage of you. My biggest success was in one game where I became fast friends with Moghul India. perhaps the biggest military challenge was building up a navy-it's essential for that part of the world. In one game I did learn to build european-style warships and had a mixed fleet of those and Chinese designs but in some ways I wish I hadn't. European ships do carry more gun, for example, but the Chinese large war junks were just so different and fascinating a purely Chinese-design fleet feels better.
