Post by Kingmaker Fri Jan 30, 2009 9:34 am

How many of you read, have read or are reading Flagship?

How many of you would take up an electronic subscription of the magazine instead of a paper one? (a pdf doc to download and read and/or print off at home?)

    Who is Flagship?
    this is flagship... http://flagshipmagazine.com/portal.php

Please post your answers here, thank you....

I have often thought about taking the magazine as a PDF. However, I am doing get to read what I have coming in now. My gaming interest is narrow and looks primarily at historical games such as these. How much of this genre does the magazine cover?

I have been subscribing to Flagship since January 1992 (issue 35). Back then it was a all PBM magazine, but they have been forced to spread out to anything games related since the PBM market is much smaller than it used to be.
I enjoyed it more when it was all PBM , but there just is not enough "old school PBMers" around so I take what is offered. I am going to subscribe as long as they will produce the magazine. I prefer a printed magazine but I would accept a PDF file if I had to.

I think Arador has it right I am of the same mind, I pefered the pure PBM feel of it but they have diveresed, but it is a state of the hobby now wheere on line games make more of a challange and the old versions of paper are hard pushed to keep up.

I agree with Kingmarker - PBM/PBEM will have to evolve or wither. Flagship will follow along so long as the dedicated editors and contributors keep going.

My sense is the the magazine is a labour of love and not a job you'd base your mortgage on. Carol and the team need and deserve our support.

For example, I'm going to review Scramble for Empire for the magazine after ten turns or so. Perhaps other players could do likewise for another game?

While I don't currently subscribe to Flagship for the same reasons as mentioned earlier (my first issues were back around #22 or so, which I still have), I like the fact that John will be doing a review of SFE. In fact, I think, assuming Carol has the room and SFE has a few willing players, maybe several SFE players could submit a synopsis of their nations over that same 10 or 12 month(turn) period.

Each player could keep a diary of their intentions and desires and the results each month(turn), successes and failures, their adversaries and allies etc. It would be interesting to see how the players saw the first 12 turns of the game. If for example, we had those perspectives from the British, Italians, Nippon and North America in Flagship, it would fit nicely with John's general game review and might go a long way in defining Agema's games and gamemastering. The nations could be any 3 or 4.

I plan to keep a personal journal of my nation from a historical standpoint, making monthly (turn) entries, so I can look back on it over time and review the successes and failures of my adminstration as well as those many moments of unfounded paranoia and the few moments of brilliant foresight. It will be in the form of a diary, probably penned by my prime minister with his thoughts on policy, individuals (characters) and national goals.

A few of these would make a good read in Flagship.

    Tony
