Islamic Caliphate is still active; had a letter this turn.

Yes, playing for 20 years does seem fanatical but still fun. On my first turn back in 1989 I invaded Venice; not so rash these days, play the long game!

The level of detail in my position is testament to those 20 years. Superbly drilled army and navy, sound infrastructure, irrigation canals and internal security spies who have been place for 15 years!

Glad to hear the caliphate is still active, hadn't seen much activity out of the position in the last bit and wondered.

I take it you dropped as Russia? No real activity that I recall in the last number of months, but then the whole game is relatively quiet. Just the slow boil of morocco.

It was the game I joined to learn the ropes before game 8, and it has saved me a number of errors in game 8 (though I've still made enough!), but it isn't a very dynamic game.

France is trying to invade the american republic without much success to date. (the pope suggested in the paper that starting a war in defense of an act of cannibalism wasn't very christian. )

Spain/Portugal invaded morocco over piracy/white slavery etc, and then after they left it joined, then unjoined the caliphate.

Spain has been having battles over something in taiwan with the chinese.

The Austrian succession crisis passed without much incident, and Spain now holds hungary.

    The HRE just died.

As the pope, I've been using my great charm to piss off most everybody :-)

    Chinese army outside Suo again.

Morocco will be interesting; Moroccan fleet rebelled against its Caliphate masters 2 months ago and attacked Algiers. The attack wiped out the Morocco fleet but placed the Caliphate in a difficult position; retaliate and risk a general war with the Catholic powers.

Thanks to both Deacon and Hapsburg Smile I do always find such updates interesting.

I must admit I never got the Spanish reasoning in attacking Taiwan, always seemed too big a prize for the Chinese to give up!

I got a history lesson a while back that the spanish attempted to conquer Japan a while back (didn't say how long ago). Didn't succeed, but did get the shogun killed.

I would have thought southern africa would be ripe for conquering rather than lands so far east. Ditto your perspective on the chinese. The one thing they have is a lot of bodies....

The attack on the Caliphate at Algiers wasnt a rebellion. To be a rebellion would suggest it was the Caliphate military that attacked. The Moroccan fleet, that sailed into Algiers under false colours has NEVER been part of the Caliphate military. This was a pre-meditated, planned and ordered attack from another player who wont be allowed to hide behind claims of "rebellion".

The Caliphate has endured a difficult couple of years diplomatically but this is the first open military attack on its territories.

More war of words between Morocco and the Caliphate. Either Morocco is a player, or there is a spy at work, because it seems very active for an NPC to me. Morocco also seized a caliphate army camp in Meknes.

10 units of chinese cavalry showed up near the spanish fortress of Suo.

Quebec declared for France, and the americans managed to spike some guns at an abortive battle near philadelphia, but not much else.

King James just posted a throwdown letter with the pope. As a player, I admit I'm baffled at what the player/character is trying to accomplish, but the public argument, started by King James, has gotten me on the honour list, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much!

I always found King James to be a supportive character but he was always very sensitive to slights (real and perceived) and would be very public in his protestations against them.

I can only assume he feels you accused him of a terrible crime...like passing the port the wrong way Very Happy

Well, he certainly has been acting like that so that might explain it, though now I think I'm sort of backed into a corner and am going to have to excommunicate him for it. Have to do more research.

He actually suggested that he wanted to duel me in a letter! The Pope! Serious crazy talk (I mention it here, because I actually mentioned it in the paper too.)

The pope is 88! And I can promise you, he isn't going to duel anyone, though the suggestion that king james thought that made sense was a real jaw dropper to me.
