How do you play it? Empty How do you play it?

As we're just launching into game 8, I thought it would be interesting to see how different players played their positions.

Do you try and raise military forces along historical lines? And institutions, again do you go for ones that historically existed in your country in the early 18th Century?

For myself, when playing England and Denmark I did, as far as possible (though also taking on board new developments where I could). When playing part of China, it has been much harder, mostly because the information isn't there (limited info on military forces, hardly any on civil institutions) so I tend to be more creative.

I'm in G6, 7 and 8 and tend to find myself taking on natural characteristics of the power I'm playing.

Well, in game 3, I'm the papal states, and I can't imagine doing anything other than being "popey"

In game 8, I'm going to play a little looser.

I think if you're playing one of the technologically backwards nations, it would be hard to play historically when your player knows how badly that will screw you.

I've known players do very well playing some of the more 'behind' nations. Particularly Africa but they tend to focus on the advantages of their position. TF and Skirmish Cavalry are far more effective in certain terrains for example.

That's true; I'm not sure if China counts as 'behind' but I have done quite well when playing it.

I've only ever had short goes at playing China. I've played Japan and was pretty succesful with that dominating the FA trade and pretty high in African trade too. But those times are past.......

One of my positions is a FE nation which I plan to make a 'quiet' yet 'powerful' nation. Interestingly the methods I'm using tend to be the methods that we see in that region's history - not because I intentionally choose to mimic them, but because it just seems the natural thing to do. It's odd how I fall into the mindset.

I had a bunch of what I thought were innovative plans for my nation in game 8, only to read this morning while waiting on Jury duty that this is exactly what transpired historically! I guess I'm not as innovative as I thought...
