The new guy

Post by Mustang Shooting Stars on Mon Oct 17, 2011 10:33 pm

I am joining game 8 and just wanted to say a quick hello to everyone.

How is game 8 panning out? I hear it is the newest game world so I hope I can contribute in a small way as leader of ???????. I am told my position is part of quite a lively little area of the globe so I am excited about that.

Actually, not sure if I am allowed to mention which position I am taking up... but I should get my start up in a few days so might reveal more soon.

Kind regards and good luck to all.

Welcome.

Some players are open about who they play, others are coy.

I guess it's a matter of personal style.

Good point on the old papers. that's one of the best ways to catch up on public knowledge of what has happened in-game.

Hey everyone, thanks for the warm welcome. Most Kind...

Ah that's a great help! I was fruitlessly 'Googling' for the old papers with no luck as I thought they would be an excellent resource - I'm obviously thinking in the right direction already. Jolly good Fantastic news that they are stored on the wiki page.

So, any guesses as to which position I am? For a further hint I am smack in the middle of one of the most volatile areas of the history of modern Europe, if not the world.

Nice quiet place for my first position then... gulp.

I got the rule book yesterday, which I am slowly digesting. Might need a bit of help when I get the start-up turn delivered.

I've played various computer moderated PBMs before but not really for about 15 years so I hope I can get the bug back. I've recently left London for the quiet-ish life in the shires so have a little more time to play with.

Ah, so I have quite a bit of time to do my set-up turn once it arrived then. About two weeks I guess?

How did your turn go? things work out as you envisioned? Smile

For my own part, yes too. A stance has been made - will be interesting to see the response....

Something I have noticed in the years I've been playing is that you (or rather I) quickly fall into a character.

Ah I got the newspaper and my start up turn today. Peachy.

All seems somewhat unfathomable at the moment, but a number of things have pricked my interest significantly and my bond for my nation grows with every day. Feels strange especially as I'm not a nationalistic fellow by nature.

Anyway, it's often this slightly intimidating and confusing - but rapid learning stage - that is the most exciting in games and in real life (such as when you start a new job or are, er, born or rise to power...).

So I am simply going to revel in my floundering, or wallow in my confusion - if that makes sense.

it makes complete sense.

It was 6 turns in before I had much of a handle at all on what I was doing.

My fair warning is to be cautious for a bit. Some people like to try to take advantage of the new guy :-)

The game is vast and deep and it takes a while to get your legs under you.

What I am struggling to find out is what a 'normal' level for things is... having taken over a previously run position I have no idea what damage was either deliberately or foolishly done to the position.

It would be good to know what a 'solid' cash balance was, or a terrible or average trade income etc or how many was a fair amount of units to guard your capital city or a vital border town for example.

I guess you just learn this from experience over the turns? Or is there anywhere I can find safe/unsafe levels?

One question I do have is... under 'the assets of xxxx' right at start of turn - have those things partly been built and that figure next to it is their value, or are they presently being built and that is how much more you need to pay?

And can you cancel or pause them?

Prudent to ask someone who is not in game VIII in another form. That would keep your laundry off the line. Suspect

Indeed, I tried to put it in a way that would not give away anything important or mean revealing anything private... perhaps I didn't do such a good job?? confused

You did fine. not clear what your real issues are.

My guess is that if you're a smaller position that you haven't been 'screwed up' because your position hasn't had a player. GM/non-player positions tend to be relatively passive.

Thanks, probably nothing much but I guess my issue is kind of that I am scanning all the information and financial figures and because I am not sure exactly how to analysis it I am worried that there is something drastically wrong that I won't notice through lack of experience.

So I guess it is down to me to ask my various advisors anything like that?

I am still curious about further explanation of the question I asked: "Under 'the assets of xxxx' (right at start of the turn printout) - have those things listed partly been built and that financial figure next to it is their value, or are they presently being built, and that is how much more you need to pay next turn?"

If that makes sense? If not don't worry I will figure it out Smile

Typically the first thing listed on assets is canals and roads, both of which have a cost listed.

Roads and canals go from A (best) to E (worst)
The cost listed is what it takes to improve it to the next higher level, and has NOT been spent. If it has, you'd have a little notation: "Roads to level X by DATE" which says that you've spent the money and the work is on-going (takes a year).

That should be the only thing on the assets sheets with costs listed because given the differences in each country costs for roads/canals are different and not standard (hence have to be given to individual players)

You won't want to build canals since they collapse without spoon dredger technology which only england and the netherlands have. If you ever get it, then you can think about canals.

For the rest, typically you have your capital city listed, yourself, your advisors, building and units in that city, then the various other cities locations with your assets there. All these add up to the annual run costs.

If you don't have an adviser of a type you want, you can just appoint one. If you want to ask trade questions and don't have a trade adviser, just say you want one to your chief minister and he can arrange it. Ditto other kinds of ministers.

I suggest if you're worried about mis-steps that you take my advice and put caveats on your orders giving your ministers a chance to overrule you. Richard can walk you back from any foolish choices if you give the ministers permission to do so.
