If I have an Army in a City & the city becomes beseiged, is it then better to turn it into a Garrison?

Re: Garrisons
Historically field arnies would attempt to reinforce garrisons ahead of a siege so you may wish to use some of your army to reinforce the garrison holding the defences while holding the rest of the field army in reserve ready to launch a sallie with or launch counter attacks to reclaim lost covered ways etc.
Not sure if anyone has attempted to "rest" a field army in a town under siege but in theory it may be possible to keep a defence going for a long time by rotation of troops so defences are always manned by fresh troops.
Its before our period but Dutch held Ostend for three years by rotation of troops (by Sea) while in period Savoy Field Army and Garrison held Turin against French for 18 months. Ok by end they were eating rats etc and were in a really bad way.

Re: Garrisons
Thanks Stuat;
I thought it might be something like that, to date the Garrison of the city has defended, whilst the army despite orders hasn't taken offensive action. Or indeed helped the defence, so I guess you are right.

Re: Garrisons
The question is more will an army automatically defend itself & or it's location. Or will a garrison defend whilst the army sits back & awaits orders from the top?

Re: Garrisons
lol it all depends on their training all my troops in garrisons have been trained to the top level, I leave enough units in each fort/city/town to garrison the walls so I trained them up

Re: Garrisons
But does anyone know how many troops are needed to provide a reasonable garrison? Is it always same or should garrison size vary with size of the city?

Re: Garrisons
I think I have read somewhere in hte rules that 35 units can be held in a fortification. Whether this is then dependant also on city size I#m not sure. Or do you need to build larger fortifications for larger cities. I would imagine for admin reasons Agema take the 1 city 1 set of fortifications approach.

Re: Garrisons
Going from memory I think the 35 units maximum, I think that applies to a stand alone fortress; one that is at a city I think has an unlimited garrison capacity
