Yes If you join Scabble you too can develop and crash both Airships & stories about how your lead character overcame his problems with the demon drink, drugs, the French, The Reds, The Russians, The British and various Mistresses and Nuns and is now on his way to being the greatest Tuba Player in the World.

Or you could try something a little easier like the infilration and take over of the Chin Empire while avoiding the tax demands and other attacks from Lord Derby and his Tory allies in the HEIC. Small men who just do not understand your greatness or how Opium liberates the mind.

I tried Scramble during mid-2017, but it wasn't really for me and dropped it to focus on the C18th games.

I just find TGOK and Swashbuckler more to my taste, and can't really explain why I didn't get on with Scramble.

I tried the French for a bit. Game was kinda opaque to me, and the position wasn't in good shape, so I dropped too.

I like the humor of it all, though.

I must admit I had the same feeling as Deacon when I had a go at playing Nippon. The position did have a lot of potential and, frankly, it's an exremely fun game, but the position was so far behind in terms of technology it was impossible to consider any reasonable catchup, esp when it took me two game-years to develop a slightly improved rifle, a rather basic breech-loader at a time when the more established nations were developing Gatling Guns and airships. my artillery was basic "Napoleonic" muzzle-loaders and my navy the most basic ships with no improvements (as the Russians and Royal Navy seemed to be trying to invent the Dreadnought)...oh and my army was in terrible morale and health to start with...I don't like to criticise the way the games are run but if a position has been vacant for a long time then I do feel (esp in a game like Scramble where military weapons development is restricted ) it would be fairer for the position to be moved on rather than be in the same place the last player left it several years ago.

From what has been said above about scrabble two points need to be highlighted:

1) Unlike Glory du Roi and the prior Agema game set in Victorian period China which try to stick fairly close to its historic period..........scrabble was designed round the "Victorian Period" of Jules Verne, Sherlock Holmes & the Flashman books rather than the strict history of the period.

Its a bit like the old Agema game based on the War of the Roses being replaced by one based on Game of Thrones.

So if you like your games to be as "Historic" as possible Scrabble is probably not for you. Esp as some players in the current game of Scrabble seem to have gone all out Steam Punk and would seem to have been hitting the accounts in the "Penny dreadfulls" and some of their own Opium products rather strongly.

Though it should also be said that players are perfectly happy sticking to the original more respectable brief and its done them no harm in the game. Lord Derby & the Czar of Russia for instance have yet to launch a single flying machine & hardly ever do anything more outlandish than going to a Cricket Match or the Ballet. So you can play a basic game of colonial expansion and just dismiss all of the odd going on as stuff made up to sale papers to the feeble minded.

This is certainly how Lord Derby plays the game. My own Lord Hardinge of the HEIC is less dismissive of the Thuggee and their ilk but belives English Gentlemen like Flashman armoured with true faith in the C of E, cricket and the Queen and equiped with Machine Guns and Artillery can always overcome Vodoo Priest's, Golum's & flying machines.

2) Ref the wide option of weapons, ships and ways of getting ships to move. Do not be too put off if you seem to be behind other's in this area:

a) Weapons & blue prints can be purchased or traded for...........The Armstrong Sidney Subsidary of the HEIC spent millions of pounds setting up in Nippon & is still awaiting its first awaiting its first order from the Govt of Nippon. Seems the current Army Ministry prefers solid round shot which can be re-used rather than expensive shells. While the Govt of Korea turned down French Rifles and expensive bullets to stay loyal to the cheap, durable and re-usable Spear.

b) Or if your name is Otto you can steal blue prints & plans from honest merchants and the like.

3) Or if its too much trouble to worry about Weapons and taking control of colonies my Military means you can always run a trade company or a Church and set yourself other objectives and do things differently.

- Under these rules you need a Character to do anything so a knifed General or Admiral will stop a Army or Navy even more effectively than another Military force.

- Likewise you can take over territory as effectively with a diplomat as you can with a Army/Navy.

I think the mistake I made was trying to play Nippon too historically and like I was in a Glory game (and btw Stuart, I did order weapons from Armstrong, they arrived and some were issued to the Imperial Army before losing half a job meant I had to drop out).  The more steampunk nature of Scramble is fun (I have always had a weakspot for steampunk but then I am a goth in disguise Wink ).

I also think Scramble is well suited to playing an individual (Swashbuckler-style).  I might go as far as to say the looser format might make it easier to play an individual than in Glory.  I mean, imagine playing Moriarty in Scramble (after the fashion of his portrayal in the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films)...or Allan Quartermain?  or if you decided to defy the canon of the character, have Richard Hannay born a few years earlier and play out his career in South Africa?

Scabble gives potential players a wide range of opportunities. A non historical Nippon could see Ninja assassins causing havoc around the world, the development of Kamikazi zeppelins, geisha spies, samurai warrior monks off on missions of spiritual enlightenment.

Perhaps Bizzie should head east when he extricates himself from North Africa?

Sadly, I think that would be how I would play Nippon. Probably the reason why I have had limited success in playing Glory of Kings on and off for a number of years!

Would like to point out that scabble already has:

Assassins - Ninga, Nun Snipers, Indian rope killers etc, etc causing havoc! The HEIC is currently so worried about someone is going to try to knock off Lord Derby in Indea that he is currently being guarded by three different layers of security and Flashman!

Airships - would anyone notice the difference between between normal and Kamikazi Zeppelins? They both crash and burn.

Geisha spies or at least female spies - Think the last US President married one......hell my character almost married one as well! Would have lead to a whole new meaning for "Keepin things hidden from the Wife"

Bit short of warrior monks off on missions of spiritual enlightenment. But the Russians seem to be into Hymn Singing and are on a "Mission from the Czar" while the HEIC is on a mission to seek enlightenment throught cricket "The Way of the Lee Enfield and Wrist Spin."

Ahhh, but Kamikaze Zeppelins crashing into, say, Russian warships would be a bit more impressive than French and Austrian airships crashing into the side of mountains, airfields, farms... Wink

You can not go around crashing Kamikaze Zeppelins into Russian warships.......you might damage their paintwork! & upset Russian players everywhere.

Its only taken 11 games of Glori and one of LAK and 150 years but it is starting to seem that in Scabble the Russians have actually built a Navy which seems to have a reasonable chance of knowing were it is going.  It has also shown itself the superior force in fights with the French and Germans and managed a shore bomdardment which failed to hit its own side.

However, before players start saying they can not believe in a game in which the Russian Navy knows what it is doing some traditions are being kept up:

- The Russian Navy may come from the coasts of the Baltic and the Black Sea (in Glori terms they are Swedes & Ottomans) but the Army still seems to spend months getting over from sea sickness.

- The German Navy has fully lived up to the glorious traditions of the Prussian Yacht Squad.  And is a force which is fully the equal of the French & Austrian Air Corps.

March 1860 Britannic Times has shown up and for non scabble players here are the highlights:

1) If you ignore all the billing and cooing of reunited love birds nothing much seems to be happening in the German siege lines round Meknes apart from the Germans making replacement ladders for the ones burnt last month. Were do they find all the wood in the middle of a desert?
Meanwhile behind the lines the moors are beating up the German Province of Jerada.

2) In the America's the British seem to be trying to link Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. While the British Tea & Opium Cartels continue build up their trade and influence in the CSA, further north the British or should that be the Canadian Govt has this month spent £30M on bribing the territory of Dyers to give up slavery and join the British Empire. Meanwhile over in Dayton after British Diplomatic efforts were rejected they have sent in the Military.

- Fighting in Dayton has so far seen the first British attacks on the the City of Dayton held but a lot of damage done to the City by British Guns. For students of the arms trade the Royal Artillery uses the Armstrong QF a greatly respected item of kit produced by a subsidary of the HEIC and extensively field tested in India. To date in the hot and dusty Mid West these Guns seem to have lived up to the reputation as Queens of the Battlefield.

- Not so the Royal Ordinance produced Enfield Rifle which suffered many jams in this action. Viewed as a marksman's rifle this is the same weapon rejected by the HEIC forces after it showed up with a suspect greased cartridge.

- At this rate the Royal Canadian forces may end up having to shell the defenders flat then go in with Cold Steel.

3) Oddly Washington has yet to say anything about the bloody great red line being painted down the map or about the fact that various leaders in Sonora have accepted Russian titles.

- Probably more to Washington's liking is the fact that the Ballet Russ has been expelled from Argentina as "the tools of degenerate foreign imperialism." But even with this action it has to be said the Monroe Doctorine is looking somewhat dented.

4) Mind you its possible that the American Envoy to the Court of St James is waiting poised and ready to make a earth shattering declaration to Lord Derby.......but its delayed by Lord Derby being on his holidays.

- While war rages in the America's, China and dodgy Police Forces are set up in London Town......Lord Derby as gone on a sight seeing tour of India by Train. And not just any Thomas Cook's Tour......no he has the use of the Private Train of Lord Hardinge and is currently being escorted by this own diplomatic protection squad, the ISB and a full regiment of crack HEIC troops. Which would explain why any American Diplomatic Protest has not got anywhere near the Prime Minister. (The messenger probably got shot by the ISB?)

5) Meanwhile many, many miles north of the cricket grounds, great railway trips and the teaming cities of India the HEIC and its allies seems to be spreading again. Sadly for the HEIC Khan Hung Tachen of Aksai did not seem very impressed by the prospect of being a much richer subject of the Queen of Transoxiana and staked out the messenger in the desert.

- Lucky for the messenger and bad luck for Khan Hung a HEIC Army following the Herald and was able to save him before the sun and the kites really went to work. Khan Hung is now heading east with the HEIC in hot pursuit.

6) In the Musan the Russian Army of Siberia found its route blocked by the "Hill of Heavenly Light" upon which is built the Fortress-Monastery of the Yellow Turban Order.

- Showing the wisdom for which he is famous the Abbot decided not to risk an early re-birth and is not contesting the Russian Advance but its not sure if he has joined the Russian Empire or not.

The April 1860 edition of the Britannic Times has shown up and for non scabble players here are the highlights:

1) The siege of Meknes is over! Couple of dodgy Camel Herders openned one gate and allowed the starvation hit garrison to flee (well stagger off to nearest village to find some deep fried sheeps eyes) then openned another gate to allow in the German Army who were just about to climb over the walls using ladders.

Various people inc Bismarck & Field Marshal Model are now claiming to be responsible for this bloodless victory (apart from the couple of Germans killed by Friendly Bites)

2) Meanwhile while the Germans captured Meknes the Moors have taken the province of Jerada behind them.....with the exception of the Port of Tangier proudly standing up for the German Sausage and keeping sheeps eyes at bay.

3) Chap has purchased a house in London and a engineer chap has a bit of flu in Liverpool.......not sure why this is front page news?

4) Also on front page some Russian chap has converted a lot of Muslims to Russian Orthodoxy......again why is this front pagr news?

5) Last month in the America's the Brits were ready to run up the Union Jack in Dayton & Dyers link Canada to the Confederate States of America and draw a great big red line across the western expansion of the good old US of A. But this month not a word! Its like the whole event has been "D" noticed in the press! What has happened ?????!!!!! Have the Brits suffered such a terrible defeat that they want do word to get out?

6) In other news from the Wild West region Russians and the Albion Corporation continue to make diplomatic and trade progress in Sonora and the CSA respectively while in Washington we have had the usual diet of Clubs, Murder's most foul, Voodoo and dodgy French Private Eyes. Is it any wonder that the Monroe Doctrine is in tatters.......everyone in Washington is too smashed on Opium and the Green Fairy to noticer that the British Lion has come prowling out of its Dark Canadian Woods and it is sniffing blood and the war waters of the Sea of Mexico.

The only thing which may disturb its prowl being the gentle flutter of double headed eagle wings in the far west.

7) In India Lord Derby continues his train tour of India......visiting HEIC troops on the North West Frontier and no doubt striking a manly pose for the camera has he stares into Ghazi from the great frontier fortress of Fort Derby. The ISB and a full regiment of Cavalry sticking to the Prime Minister like glue since if they lost him it would not look good on their service records

Cool Other important chaps in Indea seem to have spent the month going for rides in the foot hills, talking about the fishing industry and the importance of not building rival ports to HEIC all over mangroves were fish breed, or going to War........as expected General Sir Hugh Gough and his Army reacted very badly to having the Herald staked out in the Desert.

With the injured Herald and his Cavalry Regt (Skinners Horse) leading the pursuit Khan Hung Ta-chen of the Aksai Chin was finally brought to battle and suffered the fate of all who offend against the "Way of wrist spin and the Lee-Enfield".

9) In the Chin Empire trade seems to be going on very unconcerned by the Anglo-Chin war. No real action this month but the British now seem to be in Hong Kong while the Chin Field Army is in Nanking.

10) To the north of events in the Chin Empire the Russians have invaded the Korean Province of Pusan

Re: What has happened to Flashy ??????????

Post by Stuart Bailey on Sat Apr 07, 2018 12:14 am

May 1860 Britannic Times has shown up & OH MY GOD SOMEONE HAS SHOT FLASHY !!!!

1) Our Hero was on a diplomatic mission to Sayradi which should be fairly safe since its next door to Bombay when a bunch of nasty bandit types filled Flashy's tent with bullets putting two into our Hero !!

2) For reasons unknown Lord Hardinge who should have gone to a Dubar with Lord Darby and other Chiefs on the North West Frontier decided to join Flashy in heading into the Hills.......Why? Why? Why? and both mens personal protection Squad's also seem to have not lost. So 1/6 of the HEIC team now seem to be slowly bleeding to death. Sad

3) I suspect that the GM has now decided that the one tactic sure to leave some of the better equiped and ordered teams rolling in the dust, clutching bullet holes and crying "ouch it hurts" is to have Characters go nuts! Apart from Hardinge heading up into the hills while a full regiment of Cavalry & the ISB form a ring of steel round where he should be we also have the case of General Sir Thomas Canterfield in Dayton:

- Sir Thomas has the defenders of Dayton surrounded with vastly superior numbers, half of the Town Council want to give up & he has a load of very modern HEIC supplied Artillery which could reduce Dayton to matchwood without a single British loss. Clearly this is no fun so our Noble General decides not to use his Artillery......against orders, not to use rifles, not to use Colonial Infantry and instead have the British Grenadier & Coldstream Guards Advance across sun baked, rock hard but above all open ground with cold steel!

- Guess what happened next? But it this way when Lord Derby finds out the British may be held up for 12 months while they "retire" a General and raise a new one who is hopefully not a total idiot. Guess other alternative if British now blow Dayton to bits and we will have "Butcher" Canterfield.

4) To cap a "perfect" month for the Government of Lord Derby and his loyalists.........The Albion Corporation (AKA The Opium Cartel) seem to have raised a private Army in old London Town and the annual Oxford V Cambridge Old Boys cricket match in Bombay got cancelled after the Oxford Chaps had a dodgy Curry the night before.

In other news:

5) In North Africa the German's have been unable to find the Sultan of the Moors to talk over his surrender terms. The Sultan may have lost his Capital and the head of his Harem may have deserted him but with a full regiment of German Muslim Tarter Cavalry deserting to join their slimmer but still fighting Muslim Brother it does not seem that the Sultan is about to give up the fight any time soon.

6) For Khan Hung Ta-chen however the fight is over, Skinners Horse showed how much it dislikes people who stake out heralds by shooting the Khan out of hand. In the tea houses of India the question now is if the HEIC acted like that towards someone who mistreated a herald what are they going to do to Pashwa Bajirao III, his Army, Court and whole country for shooting Hardinge in the back? And Flashman when he was sick? In the words of Queen Yehonala "Dealing with the HEIC is like dealing with a large friendly dog, feed it angel cake and commercial contracts, play ball with it and give it a pat and its loveable. But! Give it a kick and it will probably rip your throat out"......by that standard Bajirao the last has not only stolen the HEIC favourite bone but stamped hard on its tail!

7) The Opium Cartels man in new Orleans the "Broken Hearted" Lord Weatherbee has got over Charlotte MacMasters and is now hound dogging after another Southern Belle in Catherine McGehee. He was so distracted that he failed to notice seem really odd planning specification for the Albion Corporations Bank in New York.

Cool British Troops are massing in Hong Kong while Chin Troops are massing in Canton......who much longer will the phoney war last and will British Generals do a Canterfield and make it sporting?

9) Meanwhile in the face of no opposition at all the Russians have taken the Korean province of Pusan. To help this poor and isolated province recover from misrule from Gyeonbokgung the Grand Duke Paul has cut taxes in half and given Korean Royal Lands in the province to "volunteers" to the Siberian Host and the Abbey of Bi-Hang who abbott has seem to true wisdom of not upsetting the Khan of Khans, Supreme Hetman etc.

10) The Russians are also busy in Sonora with patents of nobility and railway plans. Count William Walker of Sonora farm but not the rest of Sonora has joined the Russian Empire and has a jolly nice flag to prove it. Evil Cults & Clubs in New York & Boston, The Opium Cartel spreading in the South, Militant British Imperialism in the far North, & Hostile Indians with religion would seem to be enough for President Johnson to be getting on with. It may be only one double headed eagle spotted to date but such flags hardly ever fly alone and what happens if the Indians start to get Russian Orthodoxy?

Flashy is not dead! Yet!! Only two bullets in him, unable to walk, ill & feverish........by Flashman standards that is hardly a scratch. But he is probably out of action for a long time and need of medical attention plus 24 hour care by a team of nurses (One blond, one red head, one brunette and probably some twins) to keep his morale up.

Two ways of looking at situation:

1) If your name is Farnworth or you fancy running France, USA etc, etc you can take view that the British Army has been humiliated in the America's, and is about to bog down in China. Plus the HEIC has been beheaded and a key support kicked out from below Lord Derby......Thus its the perfect time to ATTACK!

or

2) The British Lion has had its tail stamped on hard and is in a really nasty mood.......Dayton and anyone else who puts their head above the trench is probably going to get burnt down to the bed rock just for starters........Thus its the perfect time to ATTACK! If you want to see your characters flayed alive and they skin used to make cricket balls.

Think in the words of the Old China curse the Brits "live in interesting times".........meanwhile without so much as a shot fired the Russians swallowed another province in the Far East and planted their flag well away from anyone else in a hardly noticed corner of the America's. Have the Russians in scrabble found the Peter the Great master plan from 1712?

Must have been a horrible lot of alcohol or something of that nature as it seems to have infected too many Brits. This could certainly prove to be a most interesting time in the SFE world.

The world without Flashy is certainly not a world with reading about. What else would we have then. Vampire nuns and the insanity that comes with that! lol!

By my count we would be left with interesting accounts concerning......

- Lord Derby.......and the problems of getting good help & keeping an eye on :

- A Nutty German with a glass eye
- A Nutty German with a big Tuba
- Several other Nutty Germans

- A Russian Priest who knows he is on a mission from God
- A load of other Russians who also think they are on a mission from God.

- The Farnworth Gang

- A Royal slow left armer who is either the catspaw of the HEIC or is leading it by the nose.

- Various upstart colonial types.

In case this is the last turn for Flashman & Hardinge.......below copy of the last letter dashed off by Lord Hardinge and either taken down the mountain with either their badly wounded or dead bodies.

Hope it shows a flavour of Scabble ie Characters dieing in various ways but always with a stiff up lip.......very important the stiff upper lip in scabble!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: Lord Derby Prime Minister of Britannia
From : Lord Hardinge, Gov General of British Indea, Chairman of the HEIC
June 1860

My Dear Lord Derby,

Hope you are still enjoying your tour of Indea. Wanted to attend the Dubar on the North West Frontier but some how I ended up in the mountains with a shattered foot.

If these bullets have mine and dear old Flashy name on them and this is the last you hear from the pair of us please pass on our deep regards and devotion to her majesty and that we died in her service. We commend Lady Flashman & that charming girl Yehonala to yourself and the Queen, please be kind to them if we are done for.

Do not trust that blighter Farnworth and Gladstone is a bad egg. While the PPFL is clearly an old school protection racket in fancy uniforms, suspect the next move is a PPFL fire service and the old “Nice building pity if it burnt” while lighting matches approach to the sale of fire insurance by John Smith (AKA Fritz Smidt, AKA Slave Coast Slasher Smith AKA Canton John)

Hope the campaign against the Chin goes well and that we get some good news from the Wild West.
According to Flashman who knows about these things bayonets are put on the ends of rifles to open cans of beans and corned beef not for fighting.

Lord Hardinge
