Armed Fortress Cannon Crews Empty Armed Fortress Cannon Crews

An odd question maybe, but are Fortress Cannon crews considered to be armed? I was thinking what they would do when a fortress walls get breached and an enemy breaks into a city. Obviously any infantry and cavalry units in the garrison would be able to fight but would the cannon crews just sit back and watch or would they have muskets and join in?

I beleive artillery were armed in a similar way to infantry generally. However if if push comes to shove & your cannon crews are in a fight then they are probably in the fertilizer anyway. Staves, sponging rods & other "tools" would probably be the first weapon of choice for most gunners simply because tha tis probably what they had to hand at the moment of crisis.

Yes, the artillery crew would use standard muskets/carbines and could probably use them as well as most soldiers but they would not be trained to fight and operate as a unit so any type of infantry would probably chew them up in a equal fight.

All soldiers, cavalry & artillery included would have had a basic training as infantry. made up of foot drill & arms drill before the more specialised training.

The Artillery would have been issued side arms, it is doudtful they would have thenm to hand whilst they were serving there pieces. They would rely on there infantry supports for close in protection.

Oddly at this moment in time you can raise Fortress Cannon at any town but foot only at a army camp so you often seem to end up with odd looking Fortress Garrisons with loads of cannon and no infantry or the other way round.

In interest of bookeeping and playability I liked the system in LAK were you could raise Garrison units in any fortress ........these were deemed to include fortress guns, town malitia and depot units mostly made up of old, unfit and other troops not suitable for service in the field.

Such Garrison units would generally force the attacker to undertake a formal siege and would disband when the town surrendered. Generally, after its ramparts were breached.

So if you want to stiffen things up and fight to defend the breach you had to reinforce the Garrison with Field Army Units.
