What's so special about Hungarians?

Post by The Real Louis on Sat May 18, 2013 12:26 pm

I'm sure I've missed it somewhere amidst the rules & supplements, but... what is so special about Hungarian officers (serving in a foreign army)? Or is there, indeed, anything special at all about them (apart from the moustaches and funny hats)?

I am sure it was easier for them to garner the affections of local face slapper ZaZa Gabor, Especially if your name was Count Loaded, or Prince Deep Pockets.
Not sure if that was a plus or minus I'll leave that to you.

In very early editions of the rules when Glory du Roi was very much more Western Europe based "Hussars" were a special type of cavalry which could only be recruited in Hungary.

Now they are just a type of skirmish cavalry and in game terms no different from Turkish, Cossack, Persian etc etc Light Cavalry.

So in that respect nothing is special about Hungarians.......Of course they do have funky Uniforms and its generally more socially acceptable to hire Hungarians than Cossacks or Ottomans for instance.

An example of problems you can have with non Hungarian Light Cavalry>>>>>In G7 the Spanish hired Christain Ottomans from Moldavia and their commander snubbed the Queen of Spain's dance card!

One awaits with horror what the Mamlukes hired by the Elector of Hanover in G2 are going to do......ditto the Janissary Corp & Harem he also purchased.

As far as I know, I dont get any special advantages as the Hungarians except for having the ability to recruit Hussars. The country of Hungary itself in regards to its terrain has advantages for the defender which is always good.

My Glory du Roi experience of both attacking and defending The Great Hungarian Plan is that its basically flat cavalry country with no real natural defences.

The good news is that since Hungary generally does not have a Coast Line its only likely to be attacked by a small and select group of powers.

The bad news is that small and select group tends to have lots of Cavalry.

The key to attsck/defence of Hungary under the new supply rules would seem to be control of the Danube and other key rivers. Perhaps in the future ie G9 the Royal Hungarian Yacht Squadron with be as famous as the Prussian and Hanoverian Yacht Squadrons.
