How many spears to the musket?

Post by The Real Louis on Wed Oct 16, 2013 5:43 pm

Has anyone got any experience of fighting natives? What sort of odds are reasonable for infantrymen going up against spear-wielding autochthons?

I guess a lot depends on the native in question, the terrain and if its raining or not.

In G2 apart from some African Tribes beaten up by the Prussians without undue problems unless it rained on their muskets the main spear welding natives fought by European Infantry are native Ottoman, Moghul and Persian horsemen.

Most people think fighting them in the Monsoon or allowing them a numbers edge is bad for the health.

Picking the right weather to campaign in - thanks for that. When I asked the question it was tribal Africans I had in mind rather than more "sophisticated" troops. I'm getting the impression that not being over-confident could be important...

I think it's a case of bringing mass firepower together, I would probably say that a canon would scare the be-Jesus out of tribal infantry, not used to its explosive power. But surely well defended walls are a must.

Avoiding sickness, ambush, running out of supplies and the other perils of over-confidence is important at all times but do seem to be even more important in colonial campaigns esp if Richard is running the Tribal types. The man is no gentleman and his tribals seem very adverse to fighting fair like gentlemen.........I blame the lack of breaches and powdered wigs in Ashanti & Heron ranks.

"Tribal" foot in Agema campaigns tend to come in two different types:

Skirmishers - ie people who chuck spears etc at you from ....... often taking advantage of difficult terrain to avoid your volley fire. Many North American and African Tribes fight in this way.

Tribal or Charging foot - inc Highlanders, Zulu, some Ottomans & Pirates - people who wish to close and stick spears etc into you.

Since Regular European Troops wish to close with one type and keep the other at a distance (field works are good) and shoot them down at range its important to know what type your opponents are.

Note to self, when fighting Stuart, employ African Tribes and Highlanders...just to confuse him...
