In games I have always assumed that flintlocks were the automatically superior to matchlocks and if you used matchlocks you should strive to replace these with flintlocks asap, and to acquire the skill to make them if you can't already.

Is this the case? Or are there any environments or situations where matchlocks are a better option? For example, are matchlocks more reliable in certain climates?

The matchlock is cheap and simple but the flintlock is superior in just about every way. There is no metal in the firing mechanism so the matchlock will be less affected by rust than the flintlock, but European armies certainly changed quickly enough when given the opportunity.

Double or more the rate of fire.

No need for a burning match, which can cause trouble where large amounts of gunpowder is in use.

The matchlockman needs his slowmatch lit to fire his weapon, which of course cause a lot of problems. It will take time to prepare for battle, the smell is a giveaway, easily seen at night etc

I see its possible to invent Ferguson style breech loading rifles, has anyone developed and used them in combat?

I can't recall anyone trying it Goldstar. I do seem to remember that France early in game 6 did have a go at breech gun development on a large scale but don't think it was overly successful.
