Is a Panama Road possible? Empty Is a Panama Road possible?

Post by Guest Wed Nov 20, 2013 4:12 pm

    Just wondering...

I think a 18th Century Panama Canal is out of the question, even if you used the Chagres River most of the way and 'just' dug a canal to Panama City, but would a road be possible/practical/useful?

I'm not just thinking if technologically a road across Panama (or somewhere else suitable in Central America) to link the Pacific and Atlantic but if it would serve a useful purpose? Is there enough trade to make it worthwhile and would it save enough time?

    And, has anyone ever tried?

I have built the Panama Road, as a short term measure while the Panama Canal is built so it is possible (says he who hasnt yet completed it !)

    Interesting Smile

Does the road save a lot of time? And, if you don't mind me asking, did it cost much to construct? I'm assuming it follows a similar route to the canal?

My initial reaction is that it wouldn't be worth the investment because there wouldn't be enough savings to warrant the costs.

But if somebody has done it, I'd be curious to hear. My questions about bringing things overland in the area suggested to me that it wasn't going to be effective even if I did put in a road.

At the moment it is being constructed to allow gold bullion from Peru, California and Alaska to be easily transported back to Europe rather than risk losing the cargo by sailing around the tip of South America....and saving sailing times of course.

I am not sure if it will have much of a trade benefit but wont know until it is completed.

The costs in game do not represent themselves in terms of £s. It is an investment of technology and labour resource, which given the location can be high.

    Alaskan gold mines? wow. :-)

I am a bit surprised that it costs labor and technology instead of just cash to build the roads. What technology may I ask?

I wonder Deacon if it's like building the Suez Canal or English Channel in-game, to make it happen Richard feels you need that something extra?

But I would be interested to know what the 'extra' was...and also am now off to send an expedition to find Alaskan gold Wink

I can see it for the suez canal, or the like, but I struggle a bit to imagine a technology you'd need to make roads in the americas that you wouldn't need in Europe.

I can also sort of see the labor issue. In the populated lands of Europe, you can probably always find workers to build roads, so it is just a matter of money. In much of the americas there isn't a local work force, so you'd have to import one.

I agree with you completely Deacon Smile I just wonder if it might be a bit of an in-game fudge to reflect the difficulties of the task?

True, I've had, as I've posted before, Richard do things that i thought weren't really quite right and I guessed at the time that they were more about a method of maintaining what he thought game balance ought to be or the like.

My reference to the technology was around the canal not the road - sorry for any confusion/

In terms of the road it was about the cost, which was the standard costings for roads.

So you're actually trying to build the panama canal?

That's a crazy undertaking, good luck to you.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_Canal

22,000 people lost their lives while the french tried, it and it took a long long time.

One of the frustrating things about the game for me is the pace. I'd like to start a project like this, but knowing it may well take 20 years in game, which would be 10+ years of real time puts me off!

Has anybody else every tried one of the grand engineering projects like this? The suez canal, for instance?

I'm sure the Suez canal has been built in Game 7 (had a letter from Egypt shortly after I started saying they had almost built it) though can't actually recall a newspaper reference to it being operational

The Panama Canal project is underway for the Twin-Kingdoms (G6). Originally a ten year construction time and 50,000 labourers. A couple of delays already, so its going on longer than ten years !!

Are the canals going to be big enough to take much through, or is going to be just to get cargo overland?

all being well will shortly begin construction of the Suez canal in game 8 taking 2 years and requiring 40,000 labourers. interestingly there is no financial cost.

Interesting, I'll enjoy seeing how the suez canal changes the dynamics of trade.

Did you have to use 40,000 recruits, or could you pull from your own population?

I thought that the biggest problem was the malaria at Panama, I recall seeing black and white films and documentries about the thing. The Suez canal is a far more viable option, there was a version of it first constructed by the Persian Empire and it was in use in the time of the Hellenestic Ptolomies. I am not certain if it continued into Roman times.

Yes, that's what I'd read about Panama as well. It was disease that did people in in enormous numbers.

recruits/slaves are having to be used though when I rebuilt Alexandria I found that the system had changed and I had to pull from the general population.

Interesting, I built a town in the new world, and it used recruits I had locally. I guess it could have used population if I'd had enough nearby.
