    THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO

NEW! Using the Napoleonic Battles game system, of which well over 300 games have now been played, AGEMA invites you to take part in the epic Battle of Waterloo PBM/PBEM!

The game will run for each player by post or email – whichever suits you best – and is a multi-player affair with these notable features:-
    • All units are represented by our unique top-down graphics with every man in a battalion represented, for example!
    • Units are coded by their unit notations, but also by their colourful flags.
    • If taking part by email as a player you’ll receive one huge pdf battle map to zoom in on; postal players will get nine full-colour A4 paper maps to plan each game turn on!
    • Enemy units not yet located will remain hidden, as will your own to the enemy until they’re seen.
    • In-game communication by email or letter to other players is covered, including in the set-up stage of the game.
    • There’s a supplement which is sent out with the set-up giving the orders of battle and special rules for Waterloo.

Those who’ve played Napoleonic Battles before will know what to expect; but please note that if you’ve taken part before the mega-game rules have been changed so you get a map (or nine!) of the entire battlefield every game turn. For those of you who haven’t, you can read up on the basics of the game system on AGEMA’s website.

    TO TAKE PART:
    1. You need the Napoleonic Battles rules; if you haven’t got a copy you can get an electronic pdf copy or hard copy via AGEMA’s website (doing so places you under no obligation to take part): www.agema.org.uk
    2. Email us at agema@hotmail.co.uk asking to take part.
    3. Pay funds to establish your game account, here: pay for turns.
Game turns for this special version will cost £10 by post (available in the UK only) or £8 if playing by email (available globally). One game turn is played each two weeks.
    4. We’ll then send you the set-up map or maps, and the special Waterloo supplement, along with the game start date.

Correct that.......dispite my almost 100% ability to end up on the defeated side in these mega games I asked if I could play and ended up being given a French position.

So if we are going to have any late arrivals on day 2 of the battle can you be Grouchy rather than one of those nasty Prussian types?

The first game is full, but we're opening a second game so there's still a chance to take part. The second game is due to begin in April (2013) and we're taking players for that one now!

Ref Game II if the battle goes into a 2nd day.......to give the French more of a sporting chance can they have Grouchy and his 33,000 troops on day two?

While the Allies get the rest of Wellington's troops and the Prussian Corp which spent the Sunday shooting at Grouchy across a river.

This assumes the Grouchy gets an order to march to Waterloo and join the rest of the French Army while the last Prussian corp finds itself no longer under attack and follows the other 4 corps.

Aghhhhh !!!!! for the third mega game in a row I have ended up on the side with traitors in its High Command.

In this case French left wing commander moves to the point were action is just about to be joined.....in Waterloo that is about start up plus 1 turn then he abondons command.

Result French left to has lost 5 units and has another 4 in rout. Plus while the Allies have 16 batteries of artillery ready to fire the French have two one of which has spent the last two turns in hell shot range of a English Square without firing.

Waterloo as set up by Agema was always a very, very unlikely French Victory......you basically have to achieve a exchsnge rate in lost units of over 2 for 1 and the only Guard Infantry are on the Allied side!

The only tiny tiny chance was for the French left to win and roll up the allied line before the French Right (Thats me folks) vanishes under a tidal wave of Prussians. Napaleon's basic job is decide does he reply French reserves to go all out on the left and abondon the heroic Bailey or try and give the right a bit of help.

With result of battle now decided in the most unsatisfactory way possible I am happy to cede victory to the allies and start again with a third French commander who is not a Bourbon. Or if the Emperor (taking over left?) & the Allied players wish to carry on I am willing to re-hash the last stand of the Russian Guards at Bloodngutz.

Alternatively, if people want a more "sporting" game do the Allies want to try and finish the French without Prussian help? ie fight a what-if battle based on Grouchy cutting across and stopping the advance of the whole Prussian Army to Waterloo rather than just one small corp.

But they were paid for by English tax payers! Still say Englands decline dates from 1914 and the abandoning of a perfectly good policy of fighting the French to the last Scot and German.

You can't call British Dragoons a load of bloody foreigners! Even if some of their commanders names may be bit suspect.

Also according to my orders I am defending .....but doing enough to keep the allies honest while the French Left attcks. The total failure of the French left to even move rather ruined that master plan.

Plan B seems to be to defend for another day and a half at which point Grouchy turns up with 33,000 French Troops have over-run Prussians Trains on route. Victory to us?????????

Ok the failure of the French left to actually move was not actually treason but a cunning faint to force the Allies to perfectly deploy their reserve artillery, rifle armed foot, cavalry reserves etc etc.

We shall now either charge hell for leather up hill against Guard foot without artillery support and get blown to a standstill and then ridden down. Or copying John Churchill we will bring up our heavy artillery to blast the allied right while using cover to switch the French Guard foot and the heavy Cavalry to the right were they can take advantage of the damage already being done to the hired help.

Sadly at this point bucket loads of Prussians will show up and its going to look like Marengo with almost the whole French Army running apart from a few guns, some hard core foot and the heavy cavalry.

Outflanked, outnumbered 7-1 etc, etc Pah !!! We are Elite French Heavy Cavalry the half the Prussians are levy who we stuffed a couple of days ago.......of course we will win unless we decide to attack piece mill up a bloody hill into the British foot in which case it could be more even.

Another turn for Waterloo has known shown up:

    1) Still no Prussians who seem to be as slow as

    2) The French left & centre which has dealt with some purseing English Cavalry but apart from that is standing round in column with its artillery still limbered doing nothing but being used as target prectice by massed English guns. Why the scratch scratch scratch scratch are the French Guns (other than mine) and muskets for that matter not firing? Have Royalist agents pinched all the gunpowder?

    3) Meanwhile on the French Right/Allied left very frustrated French Commanders are using every gun they can muster (not many) and a few light and line infantry to support their Heavy Cavalry as it slowly hacks its way into the hired help and English Cavalry. But with 11 allied units in rout V 2 French who will no doubt rally when Gen Milhaud gets to them and Picton's troops only just hanging on were is the sodding Guard when you need them?

How can I apply for a Bourbon Commission? Think beating the hell out of the Dutch to liberate Belgium will have to wait to 1830.

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three corps of Prussians have shown up all at the same time.......I think I am about to die. Have these Germans not heard about the concepts of attacking in dribs and drabs and throwing in the odd NMR to give the other side a sporting chance?

Apart from the wall of Prussians and some of my units not following orders to move it was a Ok turn for French Right as the allied hired help lost 15 units for no French losses. Its probably fair to say Allied left flank defeated but saved by Prussians. Wellington also has the Blue's and Royals and the Union Brigade in the Centre which he can use to prop up the allied left.

But will Napoleon now use the Guard and Kellerman to prop me up?????

Or will they follow the French left in attacking up hill without proper fire support from artillery or skirmishers against massed English Guns and Infantry inc Guard foot. Oddly the attack of the French left has generally stalled. Pity it was not more concentrated on the English Artillery since overrun battaries dont rally and I for one am happy to lose one for one to get rid of hostile artillery.

Oh hum looks like the only way out of this rat trap is to cut my way through the Prussians and join up with Grouchy........."Viv La Mort"
