I'm enjoying volume 3 of Neal Stephenson's "Baroque Trilogy", having devoured the equally hefty and discursive vols 1 & 2 ("Quicksilver" "The Confusion" and "The System of the World"). What an excellent primer for Swashbuckler! Covers the period, late 17th to early 18th century. Covers the world (from Europe to America and the Far East, Africa, India etc.) Covers the characters (everyone from Marlborough to Newton via Newcomen, Leibniz and Blackbeard etc. etc. etc.) (Royalty too). And does the mad and complex action as well as the high and deep politics abounding. Anyone else read it? Any other primers to recommend?

The Flashman books for Scrabble......but I guess they could provide a degree of inspiration for Swashbuckler? Ever read "Flashman & the Red Skins?"

Re: Reading Matter
I haven't read the triology yet Jim but the other half has and she loved it. I must read it soon.
I have taken inspiration from Sharpe novels on occasion.

Re: Reading Matter
Do get stuck in, Jason. The 18th C political machinations make me look a very rank amateur indeed...
