Deacon wrote:Come on, Stuart, we're counting on you for the highlights reel!

Nov 1709 Gloire du Roi has shown up and by special request of Deacon here are the highlights:

    1) The Great Northern War is now over ........and quite frankly its a bit of a diplomatic mess:

    - Russia gets Livonia and the city of Narva which gives it its "window on the West" but not in the original place.

    - Sweden gets to keep Ingria (minus the city of Narva), Estonia and its conquest of Velikiye Luki. Tax free entry to the Russian Empire for its trade & an Russian agreement to Naval parity in the Baltic.

So instead of a nice tidy agreement we now have Saint Petersburg and all of the Czars nice new fortresses handed over to the Swedes and replaced as Russia's major Ports with Narva (right in the middle of Swedish territory and linked to the sea by 9 miles of river guarded by a Swedish fortress) and Riga which now has a Swedish Fortress (Velikiye Luki) guarding the road to Moscow.

    2) If the Peace of Warsaw is a bit messy the same can also be said about the Czar Govt relations with the Papacy. When not engaged in a war of words with Prince Golitsyn the Papacy seems to be preying for peace in Scotland and dealing with Spanish lobbying of new far eastern bishopric's.

    3) The Czar's Army however is doing a bit better than his diplomatic corp.......in Glasgow just as the Scots of both sides were starting to talk peace the Russians attacked and in bloody fighting over-run the whole of Edinburgh apart from the Castle.

    4) A small cloud in the sky for the Russians is the arrival of yet more Spanish reinforcements in the West........is it possible that at the point that General Montrose is bleeding to death trying to hold the Royal Mile against the Russian Hordes, Plague has broken out & the Earl of Mar has issued victory medals (premature?Suspect)..........other people with very sharp swords of best Toledo Steel have only just started to fight?

This seems to be the opinion of Scotlands Lord Chancellor who has expressed concern about the possible destruction of Scots cities. No doubt has visions of the Russians trying to clear Glasgow with artillery and Spanish Engineers trying to improve fields of fire by blowing up while suburbs just like they do in proper wars.

    5) The English Navy has now reached its holiday base of Zakinthos and other English Ships are blockading the Dutch Coast and Austrian Holiday Centre in Hastings. A couple of small clouds for the RN is that the Dutch Navy ..........or Blackbeard or the HWIC? Is picking off English Merchant Ships off in the West Indies.

While in Luce Bay Admiral Whitaker and the Channel Fleet attempted to disrupt the landing of Spanish Reinforcements and got a bloody nose from the Escorts with 5 English Line Ships destroyed. Many will no doubt claim is divine justice for Whitaker bombarding the civil population of Glasgow. Others will no doubt claim its what happens when you attack at odds of 3 to 1 against.

In recent years the English Navy has lost major capital ships to the French, Dutch, Mutiney and now the Spanish its morale probably needs a holiday on Zakinthos but if Parliament still existed it would no doubt be asking if a Island on the border of the Ottoman Empire is worth handing over key trade stations in India to Italian Allies of the King of Spain.

    6) The English have bombarded Dunbar (later captured) and the town of Hastings which rather spoiled the Austrian Sand Castle building contest.

    7) Other bad news for the House of Austria is that Maria Anna Josepha Princess of Bavaria has lost her baby, the Austrians do not have enough dredgers and Louis XIV has been sculpted as Mars the Roman War God spearing a double headed black eagle which looks stunning like the one on the standard of the Holy Roman Empire.

To present this to the world on the same month as the Empire is mourning the death of the little prince of Bavaria seems proof positive to the peoples of the Holy Roman Empire that Louis is back to his savage and nasty self and its merely a matter of time and treaty expiry dates before he starts another war to obtain the "natural" French frontier on the Rhine.

Cool This is certainly the opinion of Count Rosenhare the King of Swedens Lord Chamberlain and political theorist who has put forward the theory that the wars of Louis, James Stuart & the Czar are not religious wars but are actually over protection of the rights of small regional assemblies against aggressive absolutism.

    9) It would also seem to be the opinion of the French Exile Population of New Orleans..........first Louis exiles them from their homes in France. Now he has sent troops to seize control of their new homes!

The fate of American Protestants at absolutist hands will no doubt be watched closely in many places.

    10) But never let it be said Louis XIV does not also have a generous side........French seminaries are now open for English Catholics. A offer which most Englishmen will no doubt view in the same light as Louis XIV award of French Navy awards to English Admirals and his and the Czar's funding of James III so he can convert Parliament into a park.

Dec 1709 Gloire du Roi has shown up and I would like to say everyone has had a happy christmas but that would probably not be true:

Dr Sebastian Crane who was given his own chapel in Bristol & those in the service of the crown of Spain enjoying their Christmas dinner's & bonus payments seem to have had a nice Christmas everyone else seems to have had a terrible time.  Inc in the list of people having a bad end to 1709:

    1) The Hapsburg family.......sadly the Electoress of Bavaria Maria Anna Josepha (daughter of the Emperor & sister of the King of Spain) has died after child birth.

    2) In England......Russian Ambasador Yuri Ushakov attempted to hold a Christmas party but no one showed up.  Its not clear if the Russians are being snubbed for attacking Protestants in Sweden & Scotland or if English people just dont like vodka & black bread.

Meanwhile at Hastings the English Army continued to bombard the Austrian field works in the rain but the English Navy has abandoned the blockade.

Oddly RN Admirals have praised the treaty breaking Vice Admiral Whitaker even though it now seems he attacked when outnumbered over three to one and while short of gun powder.  A brave but clearly not very bright thing to do!

    3) In Africa a wealthy officer of the Prussian garrison has been robbed & HWIC captains had to spend Christmas fixing storm damage.

    4) In the America's i) The French Army is attacking the French Protestant community of New Orleans ii) English protestant forces are attacking the Russian hired help in Wilmington iii) Rumours are circulating of Indian war parties of the Iroqouis, Comanche etc getting ready to take advantage.

A bit to the South of all the trouble the Duke of Medina-Sidonia & Alva Ixtlilxochitl Carlos were busy feasting their own men and handing out Christmas gifts (inc coats?) to allies.  To the displeasure of the Jusuit Order Spanish policy in the America's still seems very black & white & follows a path of Farmers & herders = Good............Nomadic Hunters = Cattle rustlers  = shoot on sight.

But if you are a SB character on route too or already in the America's its probably a fairly safe bet that the RW law of sod is going to dump you in Wilmington rather than in the flesh pots of Mexico City.  Unless your character has "civilized problems" like gambling or women.

    5) Finally heading the places having a bad time in Dec 1709 - EDINBURGH

    - After over running the city in Nov the Russians & their Jacobite allies are now slowly grinding down the defences of the Castle and its clear that many of the Scots defenders can not take much more.

    - But its not all plain sailing for the Russians and Jacobites.  In the city itself disease caused by all the dead bodies is speading and plans to take the bodies outside has been spoiled by the arrival of Spanish relief forces outside of Edinburgh.

    - To date Spanish attempt to push a hole in the siege lines and resupply the Scots with beef on the hoof have been foiled by blocking cavalry and Scots drovers letting the beef run off.  But the Russian and English Cavalry seem to have paid a high price with camps burnt and heavy losses sustained as Spanish Artillery used shrapnel case shot to blast the blocking units out of the way.

    - The Earl of Mar and his Jacobite Army inc MacDonalds showed what they thought of the whole situation by marching out of the city, carefully avoiding the Spanish and vanished Southwards into the rain and mist of the southern uplands.......to the taunting sound of a Campbell Piper.

    - Quite what Col Heideken and his Russian Boyar Cavalry thought of being abandoned by the Earl of Mar in a plague hit city with Spanish & the Campbells starting to close in is not known.  But he has probably had better Christmas times.

    - Finally in Scotland (Glasgow) Lord Galloway has arranged a nice coffin and ship home to Skye for the fallen Chief of Clan MacDonald.  He has also proposed terms to end the war in Scotland.  These seem to have been turned down out of hand by Major-General Fairfax the English Jacobite leader in Scotland who is demanding unconditional surrender.

    6) In Varsailles as well as attacking Austria ref its Naval habits - The Austrian Navy is known to be made up of X3 Galley's & a Clerk with a large pad of blank letters of Marque.  King Louis XIV toasted the Russian & Jacobite Victory.

King Louis clearly shares the view of Fairfax that the war is won.........but has anyone told Charles von Hapsburg, the HWIC or the Dutch?

You would have thought that by now I would have expanded the Austrian navy beyond 3 galleys! Clearly not a well thought out plan for a balanced military.

So we have an England and Scotland that by the sound of it are on the verge of becoming wastelands, France seemingly trying to goad Austria?  and what is the New Orleans thing-are the French protestants in revolt?

Now all we need is for the Ottomans to sweep west...

Now all we need is for the Ottomans to sweep west...

Or sweep North? or East? or South?

Actually the nice cuddly Ottomans of G7 are one of the mysteries of G7. They start the game with all all those really annoying Venetian, Russian and Persian bases on their territory (one of which has just become English) and they have not touched one.

As for the New Orleans thing..........I think the RKL player was shocked to find he still had nasty protestant types in France 15 years after he got rid of religious toleration for non Catholics in France.

So the (at the time) French Colonial player who did not seem to care much about religious policy arranged to ship them all off to settle in New France inc the new town of New Orleans. Meanwhile further waves of protestant exiles fled Jacobite rule in England. Result majority of the European population of North America are now French & English religious exiles fleeing "Papist & absolutist" rule back home. The others seem to be pirates, ex pirates, slavers or HONEST MERCHANTS like the HWIC.

The dropping out of the game of the French colonial player and changes in the French Home Government seems to have resulted in situation were the French Colonials are saying we were sent into exile from Frence and have no ties to a Monarchy which hates our faith. And the French home government which is now trying to conquer its own former colonies.......very odd set up!

The Jacobites seem to have avoided problems of this nature by flogging its colonies to the Czar. James Stuart probablty thought Russian Orthodox Heretics & Puritan Heretic's......whats the difference........they should get on fine.

Its possible that James Stuart may have been a bit optimistic over how the Czar gets on with Protestants (like the King od Sweden)........clearly not all heretics are the same.

Odd thing is that while some people use their colonies as a dumping ground for religious troublemakers and are really dragging down the neighbourhood the Spanish Church & Jesuits is trying to build a Catholic Utopia in the America's. And keep the Indians etc free from the influence of Heretics, Jews, Muslims etc.

An interested enquiry... is there anyone in this game with a long enough memory (or collection of newspapers) to be able to go back to pre-1707 and come up with any solid information (or better, quotes) on events surrounding a certain Miss Eyre..?

With a bit of luck, now that William has been captured, a degree of Normality, peace & tranquility can return to G7.( admitted the definition of Normality may cause a great deal of discussion & further conflict)

Sonow the Russians can get back to their normal recreational pastimes of Flower arranging & Lace making.

We all hope that William will be let off with a spanking & his promise that "he won't do it again." Maybe a letter from his mum promising to keep him at home for a week until he behaves himself could be a clause of any peace settlement.

Cossacks have once again shown their true colours absolutly usless in a stand up fight against formed troops but real buggers when it comes to raiding camps & carrying of whatever they can get their hands on, the goat that WAS the regimental mascot of the Spanish engineers is settling in well with his new owners.

The Russian Navy has once again excelled itself, they have mananged to find a port outside the Baltic, & it was on an island which made it doubly difficult, With a bit of luck in the coming months they should be able to find either the French coast of the American continent( North or South, the main thing is getting there) There are reports that a large number of rubber ducks have been released into the Baltic sound this maybe a cunning way of blocking the sound from pirates.

In the Americas the English Colonial Army has beaten the other English Colonial army, hurra a great victory for the English Colonial army. Ok fighting yourself gives you a better chance of victory.

Feb 1710 issue of the Glori du Roi showed up some time ago and for non players in G7 here are the highlights:

    1) EDINBURGH CASTLE FALLS TO RUSSIANS & JACOBITES !!! cheers or affraid depending on your viewpoint.

    - Taken captive in the Castle......William of Orange King of Scots & Stadtholder (Ex King of England & Ireland), A large chunk of the Scots Government & a number of envoys inc the HRE envoy Prince Eugene of Savoy.

    - A Spanish relief force which had blasted its way through a large Cavalry Screen proceeded to capture the breach in the West wall of Edinburgh and held open a gap in the siege lines. But King William & the Scots never attempted a break out which left the Count of Gerona looking like a bit of a wall flower.

    - To make matters worse for the Count nasty stories are now being spread that one of his Regimental Goats is missing (Kipnapped by Cossacks)

    2) The question now is how will the Czar & the Jacobites use their victory? The hardline Jacobite view is believed to be "Hang them all & their goat as well" then abolish the Kirk, Scots Parliament & hunt down & destroy all "Rebels" and their allies.

    - When not dreaming of slow cooked goat in vodka or burning down Rome in his more sober moments the Czar has issued a press statement which indicates a willingness to hand out pardons, allow free passage and make peace using the proposed treaty of Glasgow as a basis. It is noted that the Czar is not interested in a congress peace after the dog's dinner peace of Warsaw & may be against starting a blood feud with Alpine Goat Farmers (AKA the Royal House of Hapsburg).

    3) The other part of the Russian Statement seems to be staying the St Peterburg was not built in the Swedish province of Ingernia but on land given to Russia by some place called Estomia and the Czar is not going to give it back to the Swedes as per the peace agreed in Warsaw.

    4) In London KIng James has been seen in the Company of Lady Catherine Seymour, a HWIC property got raided by the Government & the Lord High Chancellor is believed to have died in a attempted robbery at his home.

    5) In Bristol the Oak Mill Factory (a HWIC company?) has gone out of business.

    6) In Hastings, Austrian troops raided English Artillery positions but did not do much damage. The English seem to be more bothered by the Rain than the Austrians.

    7) Versailles........King Louis XIV is bothered that if Prince Eugene does not get back to Europe in time for Louis XIV next war then France's Glory will be lowered.

    - Also in Versailles no doubt as a gesture of good will King James tried to send Countess Mary of Ghent some black morning dresses (following the death of Maria Anna Josepha, Electress of Bavaria). Sadly Lord Godolphin Ex Whig & Crony of Churchill & hater of Louis XIV now a Loyal Jacobite (honest) turned this kind and considerate gift into a insult aimed at the Countess of Hainault.

    - The Charming Countess proceeded to make Godolphin look like a ungracious fool before the whole court.

Cool The Spanish Court has gone into mourning for Maria Anna Josepha " The fair rose of the House of Hapsburg"

    9) In Criminal News two staff members of the Brunn Artillery Academy have gone missing while English merchants have been charged with smuggling in Marsilles.

    10) In Wilmington Hale & Stark troops knocked the hell out of each other with Hale finally abandoning Wilmington to Stark's troops after nine days of fighting.

Oh Stuart Stuart Stuart, everyone knows that the Czar's current government are peace-loving and misunderstood...I mean, those Russian troops in Scotland were just going on a package holiday tour of the distilleries and things got a bit out of hand...
