Creative Control and Plot Devicing Empty Creative Control and Plot Devicing

Post by Demantiae Wed Jul 02, 2014 1:53 pm

Has anybody had any experience with making assumptions based on the limited information in the turns and/or turning that limited information into a player driven scenario's? What I'm asking is how much will this game (based on the other games run by Agema and experience gleaned with RC) be directed by the players rather than the GM(s)? Whilst I don't expect to be able to have it all my own way all the time I'm looking at the costs of playing this game vs the control we have over our own positions (and the threats to our positions based off our actions). Normally in an RPG or PBEM I'd expect that if you did something dumb or very risky that bad things will happen. However for this game we have one character flying a rust-bucket ship with numerous dangers all around. For example those guys who started poking around the "derelict hull" are now allegedly "infected" and in need of "quarantine". Assuming for a second the plague is real we're not going to see half a dozen characters killed off in the first few turns of the game surely? If there was a lower cost involved to play I'd expect there was a good chance of this but this game is a large investment, from a player perspective we should expect some creative leeway to turn dangerous situations to our favour right? If you play the game completely risk free to protect your large investment then you';re not going to have much fun are you! The rules suggest we're sort of hero types and can do pretty much anything so do we get "star of the show" dispensation like the main characters in the movies or are we the "everyday hero" that can easily die if we do the wrong thing (like the red shirts on Star Trek)? How much creative control over our destinies do we have?

You have to take into account the scheming go. He has stated that they are infected BUT we cannot know if it is true or false as a ploy by the new earth rulers.
Question everything and suspect everyone unless you can prove otherwise.
You will learn that Richard is a wily GO and cloaks truths with half truths and downright lies!!!! 😈

Yes I'm on top of that, I'm an intrigue man so I'm normally quite good at reading between the lines and seeing lies for what they are. My question(s) aren't so much about whether a stated piece of information is true or false (i.e. "are they infected or not") but more about whether small details can be expanded upon by a player to create the game reality so to speak ("I'm infected by a DNA altering virus, can it now terraform my body and turn me into an alien?"). It's taking the brief details/description of an event/scene and making logical assumptions (supported by valid arguments) to convince the GM to accept your perspective of that event/scene.

I'm going to try to do this with my next turn, I have to really otherwise I'd have to write conditional orders with multiple stages to account for all the possible situations I could find myself in. If my argument is a success and the result of that is what I want then I can focus my orders on what I actually want to do without fear of multiple conditionals.

I suspect Regime Change may play a bit like the other one character per player game run by Agema the infamous "Swashbuckler".

I get the feeling that in "Swashbucker few character's get killed but most of them seem to spend a lot of time:

    - Going bust
    - Getting beaten up
    - Throw in jail
    - Enslaved or Shanghied by Pirates
    - Or trying to find a coat

Basically if you want your character to look and act like James Bond its probably going to end up looking like Bruce Willis in Die Dard after a really bad night.

Although I'm taking no part in in that particular plot line I'm pretty certain there's no plague. I'm more concerned by the seeming ability of the neo-fascists to mark our ships with electronic plague tags and how they know to do that. Either something on the derelict scanned them and triggered those tags, the cruiser is scanning and watching everything in space and relaying it back to Earth (how did they take control of that ship and get crewed and into orbit so quickly after the revolution???) or they're monitoring everything on our ships. Neither answer bodes particularly well for the last vestiges of freedom in known space. I'm going with the working hypothesis that when the Majoritists nuked the databanks in our ships computer they uploaded monitoring software to track every ship on Earth at that time.

Haha I knew it! I've had somebody break in and dump a load of stuff in mine, with a polite message to return it to a location some considerable distance away! I'm likely going to be on a wanted list soon so I could really do with dumping my compromised ship and upgrading to something swanky and stealthy!
