Where's South America? Empty Where's South America?

Well, ok, I know where it is Really... But the in-game mapping doesn't seem to cover it much. Is there a (possibly sinister) reason for this, or it's just of little interest (!)

There is a fine map of South America in the Glory of Kings Atlas so it should be possible to get a map included in your turn.

Was just looking in the Atlas books (worth getting hold of) and looking at the maps of South America, other than the small Dutch and French enclaves that appear on the West Indies map, the whole of South America is held by Portugal and Spain (or one player I guess in G6) but the map is fairly empty. A few coastal settlements and lots of jungle!

It may be unexplored Jungle filled with Dragons to the Germans but to Iberian Players its "Home"!

It is however very odd how in many games the 300,000 population of the English American Colonies seem to have more impact on the game than the 12M plus in Spanish America.

Probably because if G7 is any example the Spanish Americans main ambition seems to be trying to find a suitable Vine and growing coffee etc. While the English Americans seem to be hard core Pirates, Puritan Fanatics and all round trouble makers ie Newsworthy!

Do I remember right? Historically the Pope "gave" S.America to the Spanish & Portuguese, hence the large area in their game "possession". Not sure where that leaves other would-be interlopers wanting a piece of the action - and presumably different problems for Catholic and Protestant interlopers?

I think the Pope (Treaty of Tordesillas) drew a line on the map and said all undiscovered lands one side were Portuguese and the other Spanish...but the Protestant nations went "oh yeah, says who?"

Chile used it I think a few years back to make a claim on the South Pole...and the Argies used it in 82...

Hmm, not much use to a non-Portuguese/non-Spanish Catholic power then?

Catholic powers can always do what the French did historically and ignore the Pope.

Or you could always ask the King of Portugal or the King of Spain to sale you some land for a colony or a trade post/factory like many European powers have in India and Africa?

In G7 the Society of Jesus, Flanders & the HWIC all seem to have been active in South America as well as the two Iberian Powers in trying to fill in the map. But it should perhaps be stressed that that these are all positions friendly to Madrid and the G7 Govt of Charles Von Hapsburg is one of the nicer and more relaxed Spanish Govts (Blackbeard, the French & Jacobites may not share this position 100%).

In some other games attempts to settle colonies in South America will probably lead to a visit by the Inquisition. In G2 Philip of Anjou's Spain did not even like having to share the America's with Portugal while in G9 its probably fair to say Poles & Austrians are not welcome. But a high class Italian Brothel or Ice Cream Shop will probably br accepted.
