I've been one for a couple of years now and I find it strangely refreshing. It does mean that I started from a much lower technological base level and am still trying to catch up with Europe but at the same time, it has given me a lot more freedom as I have been in something of a 'desert' with no other active players nearby really. It also does give the opportunity to try and develop a new historical path and have a go at developing a power capable of withstanding the colonial European nations, because you know one day they will try something in your backyard.

Non-European Powers
Does anyone else play a non-european power or have they ever done so? If so, how do/did you find it?

Ahh, so my subtle hints worked
I do find it a challenge but an interesting one. An aspect I have found quite successful is having an academy that seeks to 'rediscover' pre-18th C Chinese inventions that aren't in the game. For example, kite units are one plus a large number of industrial and manufacturing products for trade.

I do in game seven, where I am a 'neighbour' of the chinese. Having rocket betteries instead of cannon is rather amusing. At present I am trying to modernise my arms, but it is not something I worry too much abot, after all an arrow will kill you as effectively as a musket ball.

Ahh, we might have met; unfortunately I had to drop out of game 7 for various personal reasons.
I must admit I do like rockets, esp on war junks

You could be right, good to met you too.
Playing the Chinese is very different from playing a European power, one I'd recommend if you want more of a challenge. Honour is scored differently for a start; you can gain 'honour' by benefiting from contact with European powers (which means you can still gain if you act dishonourably to them) as well as by showering gifts on the Emperor (not a cheap option I've increasingly found). Having said that, I have found that I still gain the greatest increase in honour by acting honourably towards the barbarians

Oh yes the wonderful rockets on war galleys, I look forward to using them. I am aware of a chinese Lord laying down his power in game VII and I believe I sent you a chess set...

I'd be more than happy to give it a go.

Re: Non-European Powers
I was playing Kwantung China in game 4. Had a huge stash of cash after successful trade investment and got honour from giving gifts to the emperor. And then the game ended, that was a downer. Left LGDR for several years after that.

Re: Non-European Powers
Speaking of the game ending... Does the game runout at 1750 or could some other event cause it to end early.

Re: Non-European Powers
I dont know the answer for sure, but the rules imply the game will finish in 1750.
Other factors can cause the game to finish early, like a lack of player involvement as in Game 4

Thanks for the heads up on that. I was somewhat confused as to the who, what, and where factor!

Re: Non-European Powers
I'm putting this in this section since it concerns itself with the non-MAJOR-European powers.
Can anybody tell me if any of the games they play have such positions as;
The Knights Of Saint John (was it these? The ones based at Valetta in the Med' & concerned themselves with fighting the Mohammedans)
A Merchant enterprise - I remeber ready of such years ago.
A banking consortium - again I read of such, I think.
Obviously, there's the West Indies Pirates, The King of the Pyrates, The Madagascan Pyrates, The Barbary Pirates... As well.
I'm not looking for another game - just interested. Or nosy, depending on your view point.

Re: Non-European Powers
Game II would certainly be a good place to show up! Seems as though it is just about to get very interesting!
