Starting a War Empty Starting a War

Post by Moshe Tue Aug 19, 2008 6:05 pm

    Greetings Friends,

In your opinion, given your experience with LGDR......How long should a participant wait (after taking over as a new player) before commencing active hostilities with another nation/kingdom?? Would you consider waiting 2 months (in-game time)too soon? Or mayhap 6 months (in-game time) too soon? I would personally consider waiting at least a year (in-game time), so as to consolidate my position and build-up my resources!

    I solicit your opinions...........

wars happen, sometimes you join and are at war, but new, new players who have never played LGDR should wait at least a year maybe longer before commiting them selves to one...

    Ok......Hypothetical scenario:

Player "A", sends Player "B" a letter making certain serious threats, promising grevious harm to Player "B", if "B"doesn't comply with certain civic actions requested by "A" (thank you for your nice letter, I'm happy that you're getting married, but, hey, if you don't move your clothsline, yatta yatta yatta)!! You get my drift I think!

The only contact "B" has had is to write the usual stuff; Peace, Love. Brotherhood, Rock-in-Roll!! That sort of thing. Of course, now "B" feels like doing the "Maccabee Shuffle" all over "A"s Diplomatic Pouch!!

"B" could fight a War with "A", but, why attempt to trounce a player, when an OOC comment might work?? Or is OOC not "Kosher" in this case?

I waited two game years to both structure my armies and navy, and to work out a rough plan of attack. As I type this my brave boys are marching on their allocated targets.

Greetings Wildee, and thank you for your input!! albino Two game years (or more) sounds about right! I've yet to have to fight a war in LGDR, thank the L-rd. I usually try to upgrade my Army and Navy, and civilize
my country with education and the Arts! Unfortunetly, my country usually ends-up bancrupt, then I quit!

Exactly the same for me when I started dabbling in LGDR, spend the money bankrupt the country and drop out. This time I am doing slightly better, as rather than spending it all I concentrated on actually running the country and controlling the court, I also discovered the pleasure of actually writing to the other players.
Still this is my first war, so I'll see how it goes...

wars can be fun, even if you are losing, just remember there are many ways to win a war and lose them, not all "wins" are on the battlefield, honour and a dragged out war can wear an enemy down.

I've never fought a war although I have been involved in smaller 'actions'.
I would wait at least a full year 'game time' before entering into hostilities, but then why spend all of that hard earned cash on your troops to only go and get them dirty and disorganised.

I am still getting used the difference in the rules in that regard. Further, I have read with much interest the actions in Siam.

I think I am getting used to the new rules (Game 7). I have been reading, and re-reading them very carefully as I am committed to a forthcoming action as well.
For my position at least it certainly requires alot of planning and fore-thought if you want to avoid a bit of a catastrophe. In other LGDR games I think there is more leeway to react on your feet during a campaign without too much trouble. I get the feeling in this game, an army on campaign could just as easily be utterly defeated by poor planning as by an enemy.
I think this adds a new level to the game which should make it better.....that is until it hits me hard and then I'll complain about the new rules until blue in the face !

there is a lot to consider forces, stores weather pre planning and the most important the time of year do it at the wrong time and you could see your mighty army wither away in the snow and frost whilst your enemy in his fort is safe and comfy....

And its little gems like, you might associate stores (supply) with magazines, and because stores are handled separately you can possibly ignore the cost of magazines?.....oh no, because the ammunition comes from magazines. Without them your army could be on campaign without any ammunition. As magazines can only be raised in April, this could make things interesting if you start campaigning in May and dont have any magazines

As I keep saying wars are not won by force of arms alone there are many paths to victory, you just have to experiment and prepare for most eventualities....

I agree. I normally have my enemies kidnapped, murdered, assasinated, leant upon, black mailed... However, this doesn't help me when I need to defend my country from invasion. Still, I suppose one death is better than a few thousand, I could argue when I go to confession. Evil or Very Mad
