    Post by ted Thu Apr 02, 2009 2:19 pm

    Hi all.

    My rulebook arrived today(well 10 mins ago)and I need some advice of which game to join.I won't give a list of vacant positions as it may give some players an unfair advantage to know which positions aren't player controlled! Very Happy
    Anyway the games are:2,3,6 and 7.
    There is a position in game 6,but it may be a bit to big for me to handle at first.Any advice on which game would suit a new boy?

    Also not sure on whether to play by PBM or PBeM.

    My problem is that due to a disability(Kingmaker will know this as I mentioned it on the Flagship site)I can't sit at the PC for to long.

    Do turns contain so much information that I'd have to spend hours at the keyboard reading through them and issuing orders and writing letters?

    Another worry I have is that if I play by mail I only manage to get near a post box once a week.The nearest one to me is about half a mile away,it may as well be on the moon for me as I can't walk that far.
    Like the idea of playing by mail as it'll remind me of my early PBM days. Very Happy

    Being a pain I know,but any advice will be graetefully recieved.

    Cheers.

    Firstly, I think the over-riding clear message from me would be whatever game you pick it will be thoroughly enjoyable. One of the great things is, players seem to be able to play in character in game but distance themselves from in game "issues" in reality. I have struck up conversations both on the forum, and even in game letters with positions that I am in conflict with. Many of us play in numerous games and I dont think I have come across a single player who hasnt been willing to help out - especially new players. In that sense do not be put off by the perceived size of a position (Game 6) although there is no doubt that larger nations can prove daunting to some new players.

    So to try to help you pick, here is my (biased) views on Games 2, 6 and 7 that I play in;

    Game 2 is a long established game with many established players. Alot of these are successful and very strong. Available positions could be at a disadvantage to these. That said, those established players have been amazingly open and helpful (I am relatively new to this game), so it does have the advantage of other rulers, willing to offer tangible in game help

    Game 6 : Is still relatively new and so positions are still establishing themselves and you could argue the real powers are yet to emerge. Powers tend to be the historical ones eg France. Game positions should have not suffered too greatly from inactivity or previous players. Some "battlelines" have been drawn and there is a strong player participation. Diplomacy is quite interesting at the moment.

    Game 7 is the newest version so you potentially get the least corrupted position. Finances seem to be a little easier in this game, but I could just be lucky. It is a testing game for new campaign rules though which might (might not) add a complication for a new player. The older rules (Game 6 and before are easier). It has a strong player base and the politics are not entirely ironed out in detail, although alliances are emerging. You therefore have a chance to join in, and your presence make a bit more impact.

    Other players of course will have their views on the game.

    In terms of time to play, its ADDICTION !! You get out of it what you put in. The game brings frustrations, quite frequently (!) BUT it brings alot of enjoyment as well. A computer helps alot, I have to say. Some players such as Moshe, and Kingmaker can offer amazing help on things like electronic treaties, in period fonts etc but this just adds to the character of the position IT DOES NOT mean playing by paper puts you at any disadvantage in terms of game mechanics.

    Hope that helps some and a warm welcome

    Glad to see the questions on here... I play in games 2 and 7 in TGOK. I am having a wonderful time with both because you never know what Richard is going to throw at you with each turn. Suspect I would encourage you to read the beginner and advanced giude that was put together by Kingmaker. Feel free to send out questions and requests on here and I know that this bunch will be more than glad to assist you as best as possible.

    I am not sure what is available in Game 2 or 7, but 2 is by far the more stable world at the moment.

    One last item of advice... Make sure you get the additional guides that AGEMA sells as time and money allow. I have purchased them all and find them to be incredibly helpful in all matters.

    I can second Rev's advice. Get the supplements as and when you can. Not only do they give really useful tips and ideas, they stimulate further ideas. Well worth purchasing.

    [quote="ted"]Hi Ted.
    In reply to your dilema. I would pick paper anytime. You can read and study it as much as you like, when you like. If i sit at my computer for too long, i tend to get hot. I am naturally warm blooded. You will probably write a few letters each turn, so paper is more conveniant. You will be alright for posting. When you get your turn, it will give you a reply date, this is usually around ten days, so you should get to a post box, as an emergency, you could always ask a friend or neighbour.I play France in game six, and it is great fun. Best wishes, good luck.

    I prefer computer for speed and for the fact that reading what I write will be a challenge for anyone... Simply ask my students, officers, wife, etc. I print everything and read it when I want to. That is the only reason I purchased a laser printer.

    My shops has around 12 filing cabinets full of paperwork in it. Never know what this packrat will save.

    Welcome to Game 7. This is my first-ever and only game of Glory, too. I've been playing for just under a game-year and thoroughly enjoying it. The folks here on the Forum are very helpful (as you will see if you back-track through my series of Questions in search of advice). I play by email, printing-out the game turn/letters for slow study and reading the newspaper on the screen (which can take some time, except that I admit to skim-reading for topics of immediate concern to my position - the "Find" function is very helpful for that). It's good that I'm now on broadband, but I managed even with a very slow old dial-up connection. Good luck!

    Jim
