Seriously, though, St.Valentine is an odd celebration. In the calendar of saints used in 1700, Feb.14 was indeed his feast day, not that much was known of him other than that he was a priest in Rome who was martyred under the persecution of Claudius II. The association with romance seems to have come from Chaucer rather than the church. In the revised calendar of saints, Feb.14 is the commemoration of St.Cyril and St.Methodius who were missionaries in Moravia and Pannonia in the 9th century.
