Assume you are talking about the original version of the game based on 1914 map of Europe?
Due to length of time and need for private talks between players plus the general bad feeling broken agreements generate my view is that Diplomacy is a game best played by post/e.mail and under a false name. Though some mad people like to play at house parties with written turns every 15 mins or half an hour which can add drinking to mix.
Do not play with wives, girlfriends or anyone who is going who is going to object a lot to being lied too and generally backstabbed. Probably safer to not lie and backstab any of your "allies" esp if they are your lift or you intend to sleep with them that night and just take the loss.
As for best moves/tactics in diplomacy - this game is probably 2nd only to Chess openings in the amount written. Though very good players say you should play the person rather than the game.
Only thing I really noticed was that Austria seems to either do very well or very badly.

Hi Stuart, Luca. Thanks, yes the 1914 original version. Just started reading the rulebook, a lot to take in! I will start with a game with my son and see how I get on.
