Any good soul can tell me what this game is about
Gentlemen, (and of course Ladies if any)
is there anyone here who has the time to explain a few things to me about what this game is about? The title 'global wargames campaign' gives an indication, but we need a lot more info than that. Richard has also given me some general feedback but he is coming back on Tuesday and i would like to know a few things before that if possible. I tried buing the rulebook but it gives me shipping cost which means its not on a electronic form and therefore i wont see it this weekend!
More specifically if someone is willing i would like to know a few more about the following:
1. Is the game more RPG or more Wargame oriented? Do you control countries or characters?
2. Are there battles and action every turn, or mostly you build and build for a big event sometime in the future? What is the everage battles/turn?
3. What are generally the objectives ? Are there specific objectives to follow in a quest to power, or is it a bit abstract?
4. Can you defeat and kick a player out of the game, or everyone stays in forever?
5. How do you submit the turns? Is it like writing free-form orders, or 'codes' that are automatically submited into a game engine? Is there a user interface?
6. What does a turn look like? What does a battle report look like?
7. Is it fully email-playable?
8. If anyone here has played Austerlitz PBEM, could he tell us the differences (Austerlitz and its simulated battles is a game we loved)
Since i am asking an awful lot of information, it is fair i also give something in return. I am a Greek wargamer that used to play a lot of PBM in my days, and have played several games with most of the major PBM companies (including KJC, Madhouse, Harlequin, Pagoda, Supersonic etc ) especially back in the 1990's. Most of the games where fully computerised, but i also enjoyed a lot Tribes of Crane that was completely hand moderated. The last ten years or so i slowly moved out of PBM getting involved into online gaming and computer games on my (declining) free time, with the occasional board game on weekends.
The last 2 years we brought together a company of old wargamers from our Greek Wargaming clubs and re-started Austerlitz PBEM in full graphical interface. We are not teenagers anymore but mostly in our 30s (some closing 40s, some with wifes and kids), however the lure of wargaming is too strong to get away. We are now looking for another (preferably, but not necessarily) Napoleonic wargame with lots of action and sneaky diplomacy to all join together and kick each other out. So i am out on the net looking. We generally prefer computerised games with user interface (mainly because there is no room for misundestanding and errors - we are too hard core as tactical wargamers sometimes!) but we will play anything that is a wargame, with good atmosphere and a touch of role-playing, as long as it seems challenging and it gives you many things to do without writing a vague essay every turn. (totally free form though i personally like, its not everyone's cup of tea)
If you would like to give me some info, but dont want to spam here feel free to write to me at makis.xiroyannis@gmail.com
And whether you reply or not, many thanks for reading this far!
Cheers,
Makis

Silver nice intro post BTW.
On wargaming all Agema games are via email or psot no online GUI.
However they do run Napoleonic Battles and LGDR (see the massive thread on it in the forum)
Check the website for more details The NB games is usually 1 v 1 or somes times a massive 12 v 12 games a campagain etc.
As I say check the website... http://www.agema.org.uk/page9.html

Re: Any good soul can tell me what this game is about
I browsed the website already, i saw Napoleonic Battes but it is purely tactical, no diplomacy and no empire building. I am interested in all of the aspects. And we are more than 12, i need a game for about 16 to 20, maybe more depending on how good the game is
How do you submit orders in the games? standard forms or free-form writing?
Thanks for taking the time by the way

Hmmm
You may be talking about LGDR, Glory of Kings that is all the above and more but costs and it covers the world and is only via email or paper (postal).
Yo do it I suppose you would prefer a GUI based game?

Prefer GUI game, but not essential. Already tried Glory of the Kings, but the game is too big and we cannot book one full game alone. Also it is a bit abstract and role-playing based, while we are warmongering types who need battles often. Thats why i am looking into Scramble, in case it fits more.

Is has elements of both... I would say that the game provides a wide vareity of information.
2. Are there battles and action every turn, or mostly you build and build for a big event sometime in the future? What is the everage battles/turn?
There is action most of the time... The British are engaged in several small fights around the world, and it appears that the Confederates are about to step into a fray. Further, the Nippons and a few others are shooting at each other.
3. What are generally the objectives ? Are there specific objectives to follow in a quest to power, or is it a bit abstract?
It is open ended, but power and land are the end goal. It is quite interesting to see each player pursue a particular course of action.
4. Can you defeat and kick a player out of the game, or everyone stays in forever?
I don't believe you can kick them out. Home countries are not on the map and all war takes place in the colonial holdings or on the high seas. You can force them into a corner, but you can't run them over the edge.
5. How do you submit the turns? Is it like writing free-form orders, or 'codes' that are automatically submited into a game engine? Is there a user interface?
Free-form orders... Lots of interesting stuff can happen here.
6. What does a turn look like? What does a battle report look like?
Your forces will show action and the results of it. The newspaper is very detailed and I can send you a clip from the first battle that occured in the game if I can find it.
7. Is it fully email-playable?
Correct!
8. If anyone here has played Austerlitz PBEM, could he tell us the differences (Austerlitz and its simulated battles is a game we loved)
I have not, but I would be interested in it.
Cheers,
Makis

Re: Any good soul can tell me what this game is about
Revvaughan, thanks a lot for the information! Please feel free to send me a battle report or a sample turn (it could be a very old turn, it does not matter) my email is mentioned in the first letter.
Austerlitz is a quite different game from what i see. Roleplaying is only exersised in the newsletter, no game aspect of it. 16 European countries fight each other for control of Europe (strategic part), fully computerised, orders via a standard email form or GUI. When large 2 armies meet, players receive a set up of the battlefield and may send their orders in on how their troops will move (tactical part), so its like a game into a game.
Its very tactical, analytical, a lot to think of, but it does not have the flavour and the atmosphere of Agema games. Nothing else moves but the players, neutrals are there only to be conquered and will not fight back. Not much realistic after a while, Sweden or Portugal can easily field 1,000,000 soldiers in battle towards the end game, something that would never happen in reality and this army need no supply lines to be fed. Different game with its advantages and disadvantages.

Glad to be of service... I believe that you will find the SFE game to be a challenge. I have certainly enjoyed my time in it.
