Love the the map on the left - even with all team Rome problems with plague, famine, the Guard and the Urban cohorts threatening to spill blood in the streets and the Emperor calling the Gov of Dalmatia lots of nasty names seems that one senator at least believes that:

    - Said Gov of Dalmatia is going to smash the Dacian Kingdom and allied tribes and extend the Empire north of the Danube.

    - The Gov of Britannia is going to complete the conquest of the North of Britannia

    - The Gov of Syria is going to liberate the middle east from the Parthian yoke and bring Armenia and all the buffer states into the Empire, defeat the Parthians, capture their capital, get to the Persian gulf and drive the King of Kings back into to Mountains of Persia where he came from.

A true display of confidence in the best traditions of the Roman Senate. Very Happy

PS Ref the ginger one on the right. At current time in game they are the only people to defeat a Roman Army at the gates of Rome and storm the city. Also they still form majority of population in Britannia, Gaul, parts of Iberia and Northern Italy. Their chiefs like Julius Vindex may be Roman Senators with Toga's, Roman names and underfloor heating in their Villa. But any loyalty is to their Julio-Claudian patrons not too Rome and bet half of them still have a box with a torque and their blue paint under the bed and a chariot parked round the back. Do we want such men having friendly fire side chats with Merlin while our heroic Rhine Legions throw themselves across the Rhine in an effort to save 24,000 fellow citizens?

Hi Jason - your dates are correct. Nero's death was followed in 69AD by "The Year of the Four Emperors", the first civil war of the Empire https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_of_the_Four_Emperors

Latest issue of Rome is burning has shown up and too the great shock of most people it would seem that due to the hard work of those spiffing chaps in the builders guild and in the North African administration it would seem that both the grain shortage and the housing crisis following the great fire have almost been solved. Very Happy

The alternative view is that the chaos gods on mount agema got bored with the senate spending all its time looking at new fire/building regulations and worrying about shipping and the price of grain in Roman markets (plus related chance of getting lynched in a food riot) and made these problems go away so that Senators can get back too the important things in RIB like killing barbarians and plotting against both the Emperor and each other in inventive ways.

Only dead barbarians due to other barbarians getting bored waiting for the Romans and trying to keep their hand in and no real sign of any plots against the Emperor (which is not to say they do not exist) but it seems that some Roman or perhaps outside influenced factions have got in a couple of low blows against some of the leading Roman factions:

Little known Senator Sirpicus decided to try and totally screw up Roman command and control in the East by getting a 2nd Pro-consul recalled (Nero having already called one back too command the Guard) in order to face charges of "Blasphemy" in Rome.  The famously pious Cestius won the vote in the Senate and avoided this blow but is unlikely to forgive or forget the man who accepted Parthian gold (?) to bring this charges.  The powerful and influential Egyptain faction who have just provided two legions, a fleet and 10m denerii to help the campaign in the east are also likely to join him in being upset about what is no doubt viewed in points east as attempted treason and sabotage!

Meanwhile in the streets outside of the Senate and in a action which was a total surprise to the Emperor Nero - Quintus Julius Cordus of the Guard lead  troops of the Guard against the Urban cohorts.  Scattered some of them and arrested and assaulted the Urban Cohorts commander the very senior Senator Titus Flavius Sabinus elder brother of the Flavian faction leader Vespasian just after Senator Sabinus left a meeting ref the city grain supply and security with Egyptain faction leaders who supplied a further 5m denerii towards the grain supply and too help fund colonna.

If the Emperor had not been so shocked and fond of his Egyptain slave girl I might have believed that the Emperor had decided to slap down the overly popular and wealthy city leader and North African factions but as it is Julius Cordus would seem to have used the Guard without Imperial authority to do murder and violence to a Senior Magistrate and Senator on the Streets of Rome!  It is too be hoped that Julius Cordus has a really, really good lawyer after these actions.

The revenge of Vespasian's lawyers may however be somewhat delayed as following a agury from Iberia about the dangers of Rome and the need to avert them and secure divine protection by saving the 24,000 Romans taken captive by the Barbarians the Emperor has decided to go north and take his whole guard with him to link up with the Rhine legions.

Fear following the actions of Julius Cordus is that the Emperor could be taking the dangers of Rome with him into the German forests!Suspect

study study study scratch could the gods on Mount Agema be so unkind as to give the chicken fancier of old Corduba town a dodgy reading?

Oh it is believed that being a roman senator is a dangerous occupation. Better to stay far away or go far away and keep your bow strings dry. If you have them! Some might say that the Senate (who’s factions/goals/policies are not clear to many) is like an aquarium. Watch out of the eels!
Meanwhile it is wondered if Nero will make 820?

Actually to date in Rome is Burning its not been that bad for Senators.......only one killed and another assaulted by the Guard, while another had his house trashed in a riot (lucky he was not at home). Compared to the disease, famine and general Barbarian raiding which has killed or enslaved tens of thousands of their fellow citizens it can and probably will get a lot worse!

As for those Senators who think staying out on the frontier is better for their health have they considered the danger of Barbarians? Hunting accidents? Or getting posioned by bored wives who want to get back too the bright lights?

As for the danger of Nero not making it through his Germanic Campaign to 820? What could possibly go wrong with the Emperor protected by the cream of the Roman Army lead by the Noble Vitellus and has trusty henchman Civilis the Batavian. Who is no doubt busy making sure the Emperor and the Guard will have a red carpet welcome from his fellow Tribesmen all the way through the lands of the Batavi to the lands of the naughty King Rodbold who will no doubt drop on his knees and beg for Imperial Mercy at the first sight of the Guards Eagles.

As for those who say the Guard will be really upset about being dragged away from Rome and all their favoured pass times like killing Senators & Ladies in public and attacking their city rivals and their commander. How could they not enjoy the sunshine, flowers and fresh air of a German summer?

Only slight concern I would have is that the Guard is now commanded by a man who has spent all of his military career in the east so what does he know about Germania? And is he even speaking too the commander of the Guard Cavalry who's father he arrested and assaulted? Added to which he and the Guard is a foe of the very influential Gov of Syria and the Flavians and their Iberian in-laws for the assault's and murders in Rome.

So clearly the security of the Emperor in 819 would seem to be down to Vitellus...............so as I said nothing will go wrong provided the Emperor stays well away from water and boats.

The Eastern Frontier Calling - Page 2 Empty Re: The Eastern Frontier Calling

Post by Stuart Bailey Sat Jan 29, 2022 2:16 pm

Rome is burning has showed up and for players who may be thinking about giving this latest offering from Agema a try. Here to give you a flavour of the game is what seems to be happening in the Manius 819 AC issue of Ad Infinitum.

    1) The front page is mostly taken up by a picture of the younger Trajan as a much older man than he is in the game. Probably because of the great news that the elder Trajan has knocked the northern philosopher and the Parthian carpet salesman off the top of the glory list which is also on the front page. Worryingly for Romans Calgacus and Vologases still hold 2nd and 3rd spots on this list with King Radbod of the Frisii in the 6th spot……..what are these Barbarians plotting?

Oddly the breaking news that King Radbod has done a deal with the Roman General on the Rhine to backstab his own in-laws and sale out too Nero seems to have done his standing no harm. Perhaps this is just viewed as normal politics in the murky world under the tree’s?

Even more oddly Aulus D Germinus kept 4th place on the Glory table with no seeming movement even through one of his Legions declared him Emperor.

    2) On the Rhine frontier after maiming a spy who turned out to be Roman and taking hostages from his war chiefs (one can never be too careful in the woods of Germania!). King Radbod massed his warbands on the northern borders of his Bruceteri neighbours and ex-allies waiting for the sound of battle before stabbing his kinsman the King of Bruceteri in the back. Having seemingly been promised by a Roman General that the head of the Bruceteri King will do nicely in liu of his own and win King Radbod the favour of the Emperor.

Sadly for the waiting Radbod, Vitellius, Nero and the sounds of battle never came! Is this just a delay or has the great betrayer been betrayed? Personally I doubt that the great and noble general Vitellius would do this. But some of his men may well be dragging their feet and paying extra visits to the doctor rather than building bridges/looking for fords in the hope that the Germans fight each other to the last German before they arrive.

The other question is: Can Vitellius actually make good on his side of the deal and get Nero and the Roman people to forgive Radbod for the taking of 24,000 of their fellow citizens as slaves? Or will General Vitellius actually need a new Emperor to honour his deal with Radbod? Also what happens about 24,000 Roman Slaves? Too crusty old Senators back in Rome one Germanic head is as good as another but they will not accept any treaty which does not free their fellow citizens.

Also open to question are will Nero ever show up to spread fire and sword as promised? Will the Tribes rally to the northern she-wolf Queen Kvens now that their former hero has sold out? If Vitellius wants to fight the Bruceteri why cross the Rhine below the river Lupia? Rather than in the land of his new Frisii allies? Does he not trust King Radbod or his chiefs?

Clearly its dark and dangerous times in the wild woods and nothing is quite as it seems. Any new players probably want to stay well away from this part of the game unless they fancy bloodshed and back stabbing in wild woods.

    3) The Army of the divine Nero actually got as far north as Vitudurum on the upper Rhine were the Emperor declared his new “Master Plan” for team Rome:

“First task is to hammer the Frisii. Then Vitellius will join me in a march to the east to hammer the Parthians. Then Gallus will march with me to the Danube to conquer Dacia. Then Germinus will join me and we will go to Britannia to slam the Caledonians & get that Eagle back. Then on to Hispania to have words with people who CONSTANTLY harangue me about Latin rights.”

To judge from the local agreements some of Nero’s generals seem to be setting up with the Barbarians it would seem that not all of Nero generals were fully up to date with this plan before it was issued. Some may also object too being pulled out of provinces they like and have got used too. Will Gallus be happy commanding on the Danube rather than his beloved East? Is Geminus being sent to Britannia from the Rhine to be viewed as a demotion?

Looked at from Nero point of view a shake up of the High Command and pulling commanders out of area’s where troops may may have got too attached to their commander rather than a distant Emperor is probably over-due. But has the Emperor left it too late and could it be a dangerous political move?

    4) Other problem with the new “Master Plan” are what I would term “Distractions” to the Imperial focus required to see it through such as:

    - For reasons unknown the Guard took it into their heads to declare their support for Quintus Julius Cordus as the next Emperor of Rome after Nero. A declaration Nero viewed as very ill mannered as its it is not really polite to make such declaration while the existing Emperor is still alive. Now rather than getting on with hammering the Frisii the Emperor’s plan has been amended to include a return to Rome to have “words” with Cordus. Though surely the Imperial dignity would be better served if Cordus went to the Emperor for his telling off rather than the other way round?

    - Many Senators including some in command of Armies are no doubt wondering what damn business is it of the Guard who the next Emperor (Or as traditionalists like Gallus and Trajan have it “Dictator for life”) is? Surely this would be their job?

    5) Another and perhaps more serious distraction to the Roman Master plan of Nero is that the Tribune of the X Legion in Carnuntum (key Roman base on line of communications between the Rhine and Danube armies) has declared against Nero and for Aulus Ducenius Germinus as Emperor!

    - It would seem that the plunder and slaves won by Germinus has made him so popular with some of his troops that they have now declared him Emperor. But is this one Tribune in his cups or the whole of the X Legion ????? !!!!!!

    6) The news that he has been declared Emperor seemed to be news too Geminus (that or he is a really good actor) and the great man spent the month showing the Rhine Legions how to conduct a cross river punitive raid and withdraw with plunder and captives intact. Before putting up a request to talk to the King of the Iazyges tribe who he has just hammered.

Question now seems will Geminus sale his captives and plundered herds to pay his debts to Nero and/or make himself even more popular with the Danube legions and people of Rome.

Rules give average sale price for slaves as 900 denerii so 90,000 captives @ 900 denerii is plenty to pay Emperor his 6m denerii and make really big donation to the rather empty (after rebuilding Rome) Imperial Treasury. But since is the first big Roman victory we do not know how badly a sudden large influx of slaves will depress the price.

Or will Geminus offer return the captives and herds to the King in return for support of Iazyges Lancers v The Dacians or someone else?

As for the Iazyges King does he now follow the star of Geminus or is he so embittered by unprovoked Roman attacks (Nero having ordered counter raids on Dacians not the Iazyges due to Dacian raids) that he turns to Scorilo of Dacia?

    7) Even before hearing about Nero master plan to conquer his kingdom, Scorilo has declared that he has had enough of local Roman diplomacy and has decided to answer with the Falix!

    - Dacians have now destroyed a Roman wine press, routed a unit of Roman Cavalry killing its commander and may have taken the town of Divio.

Clearly its all rather “interesting times” on the Danube. But what the hell is actually happening may only be known to local Roman commanders and either they do not know or are not saying.

Note – Not sure if position is NPC or not but if as a Player you are anti toga wearing but do not want to live in a hut or a tent. The Kingdom of Dacia would seem to be a good position as its got proper fortresses, gold mines and all the mod cons of a Greek and Steppe influenced Celtic style Kingdom.

Cool In the East it still seems a bit of a phoney war. With Jewish bandits paid by Parthia raiding Caravans and clashing with local Roman forces. But no actual clashes between the Legions and the Parthian Army proper.

The good bit is that both sides know who they are fighting and seem to be trying to find out locations or hostile forces while trying to hide size and strength of own forces. So if you join in the east you at least know who is on your side and who is trying to fill you full of arrows. Unless you pick one of the positions in the middle! Probably best to avoid Kingdoms of Iberia and Albania as these have plague but Armenia is an interesting one as its current King is the brother of the King of Parthia but holds his throne from Nero! While for the true lover of pain there is always Judea for the type of player who takes a Polish Commonwealth or Jacobite position in Glori.

    9) North of the true Eastern front in the mountains and on the Steppe where the Horse Lords roam.
As mentioned above a terrible plague has hit the Mountain Kingdoms of Iberia and Albania (not the modern lands with same name but Kingdoms of same name east of the Black Sea). The basic importance of these Kingdoms is that they control the mountain passes between the hairy horse types like the Huns, Roxolani and the Alans and the loot of civilized lands.

So does the plague mean that the Caspian Gates are now unlocked and swinging in the wind?

Currently the various Horse Lords are still doing weird nomadic shaman type stuff which involves flowers and vanishing women (no I do not get it either !?) but could that now change?

    10) In Britannia – as per usual not a lot seems to be happening. Roman and Brigantine scouts did look at each other and the Romans have built a bridge but basically the conquest seems stuck. Perhaps Nero is right and it needs Geminus to get it going again. Though just to be on the safe side Calgacus of the Caledoni has built himself a new hill fort and is starting work on a nice tomb for Royalty. Somewhat oddly some of his men are reported to have arrived in Ctesiphon of all places asking for Parthian gold?! Which is either sign of want to be Scots on the make or the evil of the King of Kings reaching out to menace the Roman Empire from all directions.

Tend to think of Britannia as a sleepy backwater good for the type of player who takes a Chin province or an African power in Glori but I may be wrong since you are even down to get a visit from Nero.

    11) If all the above has you thinking RIB is too warlike for you, there are some civilized bits with no Germanic headhunters, well North Africa and Hispania to be exact. In Egypt they seem to have spent month writing scrolls on the arts while in Hispania the major interest seems to be the next Iberian games. Finally having decided on the venue for the Gladiators and sorted out a few other problems games related problems all now seems ready for the Emperor when he finally visits after dealing with a few minor matters first.

    - Though on reading the Master Plan Vitellius is understood to have muttered something along lines of “We can keep him alive in the middle of Germanic hordes and Parthian cavalry armies. But if he steps into the middle of a bunch of Olive Oil barons and tells them 200 years of hopes and dreams are dust. That is flipping dangerous.”

EVERYONE has claimed they invented the bagpipes, including the Chinese! (who also want to claim golf!)

But I hold with the late great Barry Cryer on this one...the definition of a (Scottish...and in this context Caledonian) gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipes...but never does

The capital of the Empire will be moved to Aberdeen

Togas are out, trews will be in

No more wine...it's ale all the way

Billy Connelly will be declared a God

Haggis to be served at all imperial banquets

Legions Eagles to be replaced with Grouse

(Nurse, the screens, he's having one of his turns again)

One thing I am puzzled by is that it's not just a Tribune in a Legion who has declared Geminus is Emperor but also a Senator called Pollio. I mean yes a drunk army officer saying something silly in a remote part of the empire is one thing but a Senator saying the same in Rome, isn't that more of a challenge? Nero may be absent but his wifey is still in town and might object to becoming an ex-empress?

Or do we need to rewrite the ex-parrot sketch?

With a Senator Pollio and a Tribune Rectus (or it that Rictus?) sounds like a dead parrot sketch to me!

Question is is this will this particular bird fly and who is behind this attempt to cause confusion and disorder in Roman ranks? - The Gods of chaos on Mount Agema, an outside power, or a member of the Senate itself?

While it may be Geminus flying a parrot himself to see how much support he has in the Legions and Senate for an Imperial bid this would be very odd timing indeed by a man who was in the middle of a tricky river crossing etc on the Danube which had at least the potential to go badly wrong under the thundering hoofs of some very upset lancers wanting their cattle back.

Rather I suspect two possible reasons a) Geminus wins victory/takes 90,000 slaves etc - the Gods role a dice to see if some of your support get carried away and dump you right in it with the Emperor or b) Someone else either wants to rush Geminus into a attempt on the Purple or just wants to cause trouble or a diversion and has picked on Germinus as the Emperor current least favourite general and dumped him even further in it than he was before.

Think a follow up question to this is "What Geminus did next" does he decide he might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb and attack the Emperor and the Guard while they are in the north every other Army commender seems to be on the wrong side of a river or otherwise too busy to march too the help of the Emperor?  Working on basis that the Empire will just accept a change at the top if it is quick, out of sight and does not involve disruption to trade and blood all over the streets of Rome.

Or does Geminus try and convince the Emperor that he is his majesties most loyal subject and general and that both of them have been the victims of a dastardly plot and the X Legion needs a new Tribune?........back to "This Tribune is dead, this Tribune is no more."
