Ive just joined this forum and plan to join "Glory of the Kings" very soon. I'm new to this type of gaming and normally play Table Top miniatures or Board Games. But due to a recent illness in the family and my work commitments Im finding I have less and less time to commit to playing and meeting friends. So I am hoping this will be a good alternative I have played similar games of the PC such as Crusader Kings 2. I do have an interest in the 17th - 18th Centuries though have not really explored the period as much as I would like. Thus I'm hoping 2019 will change all that. I look forward to playing and chatting about the hobby in the future.

Re: New Here
Welcome Sir! I indulge in tabletop & board games as well, when time allows. I recently returned to GoK & find it a pleasant & interesting distraction that fits into a busy lifestyle. I am sorry to hear about the family illness, but I am pleased to say GoK creates a window for creativity & imagination, that leaves life’s stresses & sorrows to one side.

Welcome,
Certainly hope this helps act as a distraction from real world troubles. Been playing LGDR for over 20 years now, but also came from a board game table top interest. Hope you have an enjoyable time playing & interacting with all the others you find both here in the forum & also in the game.

Re: New Here
Hello and welcome
Yes, I'm another tabletop gamer who also indulges in Agema. I find that TGOK satisfies my desire for roleplaying and (long term) campaigning that my tabletop wargaming opponents (or solo gaming) can't offer. We're all a friendly bunch on the forum, and someone will always be able to help out with any questions that any player might have.

Welcome
I am also playing a lot of boardgames, which I enjoy a lot. TGoK is a different creature, with each turn taking a month, income is received once a year and plans can take a very long time to come to fruition.

Re: New Here
Echoing the general Welcome Aboard... GoK is very much it's own beast, slow-moving, endlessly complex, open-ended and addictive. The only limit to what you can attempt is your own imagination (and Richard's rulings and curve-balls). Enjoy.

Re: New Here
Welcome.
It is a great game, though the pace can be pretty glacial. I find it a ton of fun and a good inspiration to learn more about the period, particular for the nation I'm running.
It can also be extremely frustrating, because almost nothing is easy. Cleverness helps a lot, but often all you can do is make the impossible merely extraordinarily challenging.

Welcome aboard. I recently came back to GOK for similar reasons and it's got me back into reading history books too. Everyone is friendly and helpful so do ask if we can help - watch for gentle in game national bias as it's not just Richard who can throw a curve ball

Just a quick question. Has anyone played No Peace Without Spain by Compass Games. As this is based on the Spanish Succession I wondered if there might also interest here.

If you going to do Glory, the mainstay game around here, most everyone is more than happy to help with the learning curve.

Re: New Here
Morning,
Relatively new to GoK and my first post in the forum!
I have been paying a few months now in a game but feel I'm struggling to have any impact, not on the game entirely but merely my nation. I understand it's a slow paced game and I'm not expecting somre radical turn around. I feel it's probably down to my lack of experience, and likely imagination. I'm just connecting dots I'm given.
I really really want to get into the game as it is right up my street in every aspect, must admit I'm struggling to continue at this point though due to lack of movement.
Is there any chance someone would be kind enough to show me their orders/ papers they have sent so I can get a sense of how to set things out efficiently, what is possible and what sort of things I can expect back!? I think it would really give me a leg up on how to get my thoughts and ambitions down into actually game mechanics!!
I obviously don't want anyone's up to date orders/ papers and even ideally from a different game from myself. I just think having the insight of an experienced player would really get me engaged in it. Like I say I've found myself struggling to complete orders due to zero motivation.

Re: New Here
@ White Rose. Sure Blue. No harm no foul. Drop me a PM & I will suitably ‘redact’ if necessary & send you a few examples. I am in 8, 9 & 10. Any chance you can let me know what Game you are in, I can try giving you a few tip as well?
I am sure plenty more will offer help & I suspect there are many styles you can learn from.
No Worries,
KJ

Re: New Here
I've just posted three examples for Rozwi ('cos we're too far away to worry about invasion or spies) over on the TGOK board. Link below.
https://agema.darkbb.com/t928-game-order-turn-examples-from-rozwi-in-game-10
Not saying my way is best, or right, but it may be of help to old, new, and prospective gamers?
I don't think my showing of a few 1701 turn orders will effect my game play, or anyone else. But, if other's disagree, then I, or Kingmaker, can delete the thread. No problem.

Re: New Here
Hi WhiteRose
Welcome onboard What I'll do is add one of my orders to Rozwi's thread, for comparison.
When you say you're struggling to have an impact, is it anything specific? Eg your economy, tour military, honour, mentioned in the paper?

Hi White Rose,
While everyone writes orders in a differernt way/order which suits them my method which you may like to try out is:
1) Reply to diplomatic letters and write letters to other active powers - Its odd how many orders follow on from promises made in diplomatic letters.
2) Write Military movement orders which include orders to rest units with sickness levels/repair ships on a old style "Orders Militaire" sheet..........If Richard no longer provides automatically he can still send you one to copy.
3) Write out my Military change orders .......headed Military Changes on bottom of Treasury Sheet ie Drill, raise units, refit units on bottom/back of Treasury sheet. For a large position I use 8 military changes which is double the old limit but boffins keep coming up with new improvements which seem to soak up the changes. How valuable some of these are are a moot point and the subject of some debate.
4) Write out a side (sometimes more but I talk a lot) of Additional/Diplomatic orders. I find it helps to use some standard heading like
a) Social b) Economic c) Construction d) Holy Mother Church etc as well as some Geographic Locations for particular orders see Spanish example below: You will note that the Head of the Spanish Government is a Cardinal so Holy Mother Church always gets its own order in this case after 200 Priests on route to Manila did not make it! While in other G2 Rumelian Orders always included under Social a couple of Horse Race Meetings/Trade fairs as its Government was dominated by the Saphi Class who liked horses. This type of things helps you to make you position "personal" and give it a unique feel.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
a) Holy Mother Church I) Viceroy Don Jean de la Vega orders flags in Philippines flow at half mast for month & Cardinal Mendosa conducts memorial service in Manila Cathedral for the members of the crew and passengers including 200 Priests who perished in March 1713 when the good ship Santa Barbara hit a reef and sank off the Philippines in driving rain and poor visibility. II) It is reported that the total loss of life amongst the clergy was due to them ordering the lifeboats to take women, children and even sailors to shore first. III) In memorial to its drowned martyrs fund 200 Church Schools in Philippines each named after a lost Priest. IV) With 200 Schools plus 150 already in Manila area how many more needed for Universal education in Philippines?
b) Construction fund the upgrade of I) Roads in Spanish South Americas to “B” II) Roads in Viceroyalty of Mexico to “B” III) Roads on Cuba to “B” IV) Roads on Hispaniola, Trinidad, Grenada & Margrieta Island to “C”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5) Finally I write out a "Treasury Appendix" to record the budget for my individual orders including the total which I then mark onto my Treasury Sheet.
6) You will note that the construction orders are very basic while the other exampl orders above are flowery and an attempt to get some warm and friendly press coverage for my position. However Richard can not be counted on to always write up your Character as you see them. So if you feel your Character is misunderstood and picked upon by the press or someone else is clearly a "bad hat" and the press are not doing their job the solution is "Write your own Press"

Re: New Here
White Rose - got your PM and will send as promised shortly. Meanwhile, just some thoughts about "having an impact" in GoK. Most of the mechanical orders (Raising Troops, Training Troops, Researching stuff, Applying Research, Raising Spies, Using Spies, Building Infrastructure) all happen very very slowly, and its really months bordering on years before they blossom into having an observable effect ~ and sometimes you just have to take the benefits on trust (there's nothing you can actually point at and say "That's an X% improvement due to my nation knowing about..."). Ditto stuff aimed at the Economy (though the effect there is more observable and usually a little quicker). Where you can have a close to immediate effect is in the areas of Honour and Diplomacy. Ambassadors and Personalities are instantly created, instantly deployed, and can have high profile in the Newsletter. Letters "only" take a month to arrive (and then a month to get a reply, if you're lucky in your correspondent). Spending on projects/actions, making declarations, to enhance your Honour are also (usually) pretty swift in result. So actively wheeling and dealing with other nations, putting yourself about in the Newsletter (you can write your own submissions, put in ads or declarations), is the best way to see some immediate result (IMHO). Hope that helps a bit, copies of sample orders "soon"...
