Its now spring in 819 in Rome is Burning - the time of the year when young and not so young mens fancy turns to war and other matters:
- Germans esp the Frisii and their Bruceteri allies were doing their best to combine both fertility and war in the same dance as they await the revenge of the Emperor Nero & the Legions for the 24,000 Romans they enslaved or killed last year. While the Roman Aelii gens are not far behind them especially in Dalmatia and Iberia.
- If you look up your character and find links with the Aelii gens its a case of well done - but its also you and every other character in the game. Oddly the Aelii do not seem to have been a close knit or even a first rate Roman gens prior too this period but there does seem to be a lot of them and they do seem to be a fertile bunch!
- In Rome is Burning two of the Aelii leaders seem to have control of the Danube frontier were they are showing all the family traits by paying 9,000 drnerii for a single slave girl while still being 5,980,000 denerii in debt too the Emperor (having paid off 20,000? or is Nero adding interest?) and having sons disobeying their dear old Dad to stay in Rome rather than joining him on the frontier. According to you Felix its more dangerous and honourable to stay in Rome!
- When not paying 9,000 denerii for a single slave girl the Aelii have launched a whole series of Legion size slave and cattle raid's across the Danube. Purely in revenge for the earlier raid on Roman territory and nothing at all to do with the debt to the Emperor you understand even if they also battered tribes not linked to the Dacian raid. They did however offer to exchange captive Dacians for captive Romans.
- Meanwhile Publius Aelius Hardrianus Murullinus the third main Aelii leader is off in Iberia where his fertility rites have worked so well that the Lady Ulpia Marciana is now with child. If its a boy it will be another Publius Aelius Hardrianus Murullinus and likely to be better known as the Emperor Hadrian in about 50 years time....quick get the kid some building blocks and explain how evil and nasty Druids and other blue types are! (They seem to ride two too a horse and plot with the Persian King of Kings for staters!!)
However while its all apart par on the fathers side for little Hadrian in RIB. On the mothers side its getting down right confused !!! It was assumed that Trajan the elder wife the Lady Clodia Manca was the sister of Verpasian eldest son Titus wife. Historically they divorced after the Piso conspiracy which in RIB has not happened. However the Chaos Gods on Mount Agema have now decided that Titus wife the Lady Clodia is not Trajan sister in law Clodia but the Lady Clodia his mother!
Oh great now have Titus as a father and Vespasian as a grandfather! Have decided that the only way this will work out age wise is Trajan father (who had same name as his father, son and grandson!!) re-married late in life and his very young widow then married Titus. Having a step-mother younger than you being perfectly possible in this period and a wealthy widow was often then snapped up. Indeed historically Titus seems to have liked widows a bit older than him like the Queen of Judea.
The good news for the Flavians is that combined with family and friendly Egyptian neigbours they mustered enough influence with the Senate and the Emperor to get Titus Uncle/Vespasian brother set free and restored to his command of the Urban Cohort.
Some how Senator Claudious mustered enough votes to stop any further votes etc being conducted by the Senate untill the Emperor returns from his trip to Germany. And now Nero is talking about going East to sort that mess out as well but some how I doubt if the brutal assault on a Roman magistrate and charges of treason and inpiety against the Gov of Syria will be forgot or forgiven even if Rome is now no longer in immediate danger of famine and the housing shortage has been pretty much fixed as well.
Only problem really is that after fire, plague and famine leading to massive re-settlement of population.........is that the city at the centre of the world is now smaller than a) Alexandria - The economic heart of the Roman Empire in the East B) Salucia - Den of Greek spy masters and Jewish assassins loyal to the King of Kings and C) Carthage- the Queen of North Africa and glittering party city of Trajan (step) mum and her toy boy.
Will someone out there PLEASE take on Vespasian before Richard has him marked down as a semi-retired old duffer and runs wild with Titus and Trajan (step) Mum in Carthage and we get a IV Punic War.
Away from family life and onto the war Reports:
- Britannia......the good news is that the Roman C in C has found the keys and has escaped from the Bath House. But the bridge over the Thames has fallen down and needs to be replaced. We just have to hope that the campaign starts before the northern barbarians get supplied with advanced eastern equipment.....just as well composite bows really hate the wet.
- Danube frontier........heavy cross river raiding esp from Roman side. One Legion did run into 3000 Lancers but these were kept at distance by Roman Naval artillery
- Eastern frontier.......Parthians seized a river crossing and Jewish bandits probably in their pay active even in Antoich. Roman Commander in East delayed by having to smash flat legal challenges to his position. Senate seems to agree with him that this "legal stab in the back" and Jewish terrorism probably funded by Salucia.
- Rhine frontier........not a lot to report. Legions seem to be waiting for Nero so he can see how great they are............Germans also seem to be waiting for Nero so they can show him how great they are as well. If the Legion Commanders do fail to keep the Emperor alive can they at least bring the body back or we are likely to be up too our eye balls in fake Nero's. Can the also remember the Purple silk campaign tent, diamond studded gold Imperial chamber pots and the Emperor's eastern concubines as a) They were EXPENSIVE and b) If a barbarian with a Eagle is bad news - how much worse will be one with a Imperial Chamber pot !! Though he will probably want to drink beer out of it.
