New player questions Empty New player questions

Post by john paul Wed Jun 18, 2008 8:40 am

    Hi All

    As I’m new to PBM and Glory of Kings I now have a few questions;

I have just received my first turn along with my details of state: Listed in one of my cities are two Palaces, Am I right in thinking I need to pay 100,000 to open them before I can use them?

At the same city there is no mention of fortifications but in the Gazetteer it stated that it has some, which is right?

If I have some old ships that I don’t want can I sell/dismantle them? If I dismantle them can I use there manpower somewhere else?

When writing letters I assume I do write them like a normal letter? Not just Hello I want this you can have this.

On my trade report I have trade with Levant, a quick Google has told me this is a section of the Middle East is this right?

That’s it for now no doubt more to follow

    Thanks for any help

palaces require no upkeep, if listed they ar eopen other wise they would not appear

Is there a star or some sort of marker next to the name on the sheet or n the map round the city?

You can dismantle then and regain the recruits or just strip the crews off and sell them what ever you want to do

Letters are written as in the book, for instance the King of Spain would be addressed as Your Most Catholic Majisty, while the King of France would be Your Most Christian Majesty, The Tsar would be His Imperial Majesty, Princes are refered to as Highness, dukes and lords as your Grace.

Its all in the rule book get it right other wise the person you are writing to may take exception! As I did when a commoner tried to call me (then as Anna Empress of Russia) Ann, he got a shock when i called his ambassador in and laid the law down to him!

Yup Levant is the old name for that area, again its in the rule book, along with a ew other odd named places. try having a read through it first.

But feel free to ask here any time

Palaces do cost £10,000 per year upkeep but as they are listed they are already open. Opening new ones can cost various amounts depending on how lavish you want them...and you'll want to have somewhere oppulent to lay your weary head, hold parties and hatch fiendish plots, lets face it you won't want to do that in a run down manor!

    Hi All

When printing letters do people use fancy prints or do you use plane text for ease of reading?

Or is it considered bad form to use computers at all?

I thought I read somewhere that you use plane text but can’t find it now.

    Thanks

I write by hand using as many swirls and loops as I can get away with. I think it looks better. Also I find writing by hands allows the flowery language to flow easier ( a little toadying goes a long way).

I enjoy using historical scripts as it adds much to the "feel" of the era, and I also try using the appropriate form of speech. You can do it any way you please. If you'd like, send me an email at:

    moshe.zimri1@verizon.net

Then I'll send you a couple of period fonts that you csn use in the game!

I type mine, but use a handwritten script font. I also recommend that you make them official looking and make certain that you use proper titles when addressing the various powers of the world.

You can contact me on here or if need be I can give you an email address.

Has a game ever come to an end? In my nieavity i assumed that it would end with global domination by a single power, but now i get the impression that such an objective is impossible.

I asked a similar question in a different area and the response was that the rules state that the game ends in 1750. Further, lack of involvement might cause the ending of a game. Further, I could see where only one player being left could likewise be justification for ending the game.

You can spend it on anything you want, it reflects your income from your landed estates, with the total amount linked to your honour score.

Welcome to the forum and game, which number?

Game and number? I would let you know but as being fairly new to this game i would rather not announce it.

I am also a little concerned about the availability of private messages on this forum as i understood that there should be no contact between players outside of the game, and here this forum does seem to present that opportunity. But thanks for your interest anyway.

PM are allowed, As I stated in anothr post you can plot a much as you want but unless the GM see s some thing in writing between players or a link as to how the plot is actually going to work, it will never happen....

Treat PM's as a way of asking for help in private etc....

Fancy fonts are entirely in period! Using a computer doesn't detract from the game, it enables you to really participate even more historically......email me, and I'll send you a few 18th century fonts to use, for free! Very Happy

Post by awt Mon Mar 29, 2010 8:39 pm

    Greetings,

I have been playing for a few months, fascinated by the atmosphere of the game, but still working on the logic of the game. One very general question I have always wanted to ask is this: how many of the general orders (diplomacy, etc as opposed to military) do players generally make per game turn? I have not yet looked into the "extra orders" option, but may consider doing so.

So, generally speaking, numbering your orders, how many would you write and hope to accomplish?

    Thanks.

7 to 8 BUT it depends on the complexicity and the length of the ordre. Are they conditional? Do they require further actuions by another nation?

In general, I would say most orders are domestic, with little impact on other nations' turn reports. I think I typically write 1-2 purchase, 1 or so military, and 4 of the diplomacy/miscellaneous (fun!) orders. Maybe one of thosee orders, per game turn, would directly influence other nations' turns. Am I on par?

Related question: should order descriptions stay under, say, a single sentence to reach 7-8 orders per turn?

    Thanks.

    Dear Quadro,

Although It may seem presumptuous you may be interested in my history in LGDR.

Some years ago I joined and a game and became Austria I didn't get the game I suppose and was became frustrated by the lack of action. I didn't do the diplomacy well and lost my first battle. It was down hill from then on.

Then I became a pirate in another game and was successful (for me) and had a whale of a time until I was caught out and had my treasury captured! A game year later and I was just like many real pirates were, forced into penury and starvation.

Now I'm back in my third game and well I can honestly say this is the most fascinating game I play. I am really still a novice and find this forum a useful source.

Good luck and I don't think it matters how you communicate to other players but however you do - do communicate - and why not let your characters write in their own style? (We've also had 'playlets' and poems submitted. so anything goes!)
