Social Standing
Interested to hear what sort of Social Standing my fellow-swashbucklers have managed to achieve so far. Tom Blakeney has successfully "risen" from "Unheard of" to "Suspicious"...

And if the Kaisers favoured bully boy tax collector and gum shoe only gives your nose a tweek you are doing well. The last man to to fall into his hands is believed to have been licked to death by a goat!
I fear for the Elector of Hanover and his unpaid tax bill........... what fiendish plots are the Imperial Revenue Service (motto you are run to Scotland but you cant hide) cooking up? Will the Electors Harem be tormented with feather dusters and the like until the Elector pays up?

Hmmm, maybe Hanover needs some Highlanders to form the Anti-Tax Inspector Brigade...
My accountants also work for Mr Google and Mr Starbucks and Ms Amazon...so I'm expecting a tax rebate...Kingmaker wrote:I fear for the Elector of Hanover and his unpaid tax bill........... what fiendish plots are the Imperial Revenue Service (motto you are run to Scotland but you cant hide) cooking up? Re: Social Standing
Perhaps Freidrich von der Decken should change his name to Freidrich von de Campbell and head up a elite unit of collectors of the Imperial Vodka Tax.
I am sure Freidrich von and his "untouchables" will soon put a stop to non taxed stills and boot leg vodka etc.
Remember "Sign up, Pay up and shut up"........the Prussian Way.........coming to a state near you (well Baden).

Re: Social Standing
I am currently engaged to visit the Swiss Cantons and some naughty men attacking trade caravans, that's the good news for tax dodgers, the bad news is that I will be round after I have dealt with them and I have more men now to "assist" in collecting said taxes....

Re: Social Standing
You know, I think Kingmaker is about to have an unfortunate accident...would be a great shame if the usually efficient Police forces in Hanover were sadly not around when he is set upon by some disreputable characters...

I think a regiment of Dragoons is more than enough to deal with "some disreputable characters..."

Tom is not too proud to accept dragoon cast-offs sent by poste-restant (he doesn't have a roof over his head, either). Why do I have the feeling I'm doing something wrong?

Re: Social Standing
Ahem... I did say that I didn't even own a coat, or be able to afford a place to rest. Even 1 gold coin in my pocket would be nice! Still, I'm sure the offer was kindly meant, in a gentlemanly out-of-touch sort of way...

I think the problem boils down to who has the better prospects and the chance of a helping hand from his superiors?jimbotten wrote:Tom is not too proud to accept dragoon cast-offs sent by poste-restant (he doesn't have a roof over his head, either). - A English Catholic Turncoat junior rank in the service of Louis XIV in G7? Or a Prussian Officier in the Kaisier's Army in G2?
If you want to be a "Wild Geese" type character rather than a home grown hero have you considered Swedish or Russian Service? Plenty of chances to obtain a premotion in the field rather than by purchase.

Re: Social Standing
Turncoat, sir! No indeed - a loyal subject of King James. (Who will have to get used to a life of poverty & hardship, methinks, having committed to an important but inglorious mission.) Who needs a jacket, anyway?

Someone who is going into Russian or Swedish service? Or someone who plans to spend time hanging around in wet heather and the like.

Re: Social Standing
Well, quite. Goes to prove my point that I am no turncoat - can't be if I haven't got a coat to turn. (Warm and dry is nice, though... if only.)
