Swashbuckler GOK Game 10 - Henri Marchand

Coming soon the chronicle of the French citizen Henri Merchand ,age fifteen, the only surviving son of Ricard Marchand and surviving mother tended to in a Convent for a disease of the psyche Adelaide Merchant with nothing but a brace of old pistols, a journal and key with some formulae in it and six louis d’or. Our tale begins in The village of Giromesnil, on the estate of Saint-Sauveur.

I'll echo the words of Kingmaker.

I've certainly had a lot of fun roleplaying a Commoner, mainly in my home country. And France in Game 10 is full of opportunities and riches to win.

He's going to need it since he is fifteen and a mother who needs some support the sisters of the convent won't toss her out to die but small added comforts will be his obligation to provide something for, so he needs to work and invest money to make some provision for her before he can seek his fortune. So things might be boring for awhile, or not.

oh it will never be boring I was set upon by 3 soldiers in my 2nd turn, had to think quick to win then over with a few beers in the loval inn....

Henri Merchand fifteen year old forced in the role of a man far too young met with the kind village priest Padre De Cluse to get a note for Mother Constance of the Convent kindly caring for his mother all these years. Warned she rarely smiled and didn't tolerate fools. Henri was a lot of things especially fancied women too much even though still a virgin he never went past the 'women are icky' phase. And well he is taking on the role of provider to his dearest mother she was ill in the mind but she was sick and needed his help and hopes to be allowed to visit her with the grace of God and his Patron Saints both Saint Homobonus (Patron of Merchants, Tailors and Cobblers) and now Saint Dymphna (Patron of the Ill of Mind) to honor and aid his dear mother. He will need both to carry on in life with such important obligations and to learn the path of being a man.

Getting legal papers he headed to the regions largest town on foot and turning a corner found a broken carriage and a man had a gun pointed at him demanding he raise his arms, a woman of means poked out her head a woman of beauty as his sword enlarged as in natural but no he decided to be good and she was way over his league. He offered to hand over his fathers loaded bracers of pistols to the fair lady and stay to aid in her plight assuming some of her servants went to fetch help. He was a commoner but his father taught him to be a gentleman for his station and a real man helps the ladies.

What is to come of this only time will tell.

Does Henri new lady friend have any interest in ships or eat Haggis?

If she tries to interest you in taking a message to Scotland or Ireland I suggest you demand double the money since they do terrible things to Catholic's in these places with feather dusters and the like!

ah, the clarity of thought of 15 year old boys when presented with an object of desire. While it has been a few years (decades), one doesn't forget that kind of thinking...

Typical anti-Scottish lies...I'll have you know we are very tolerant and liberal when it comes to being Catholic...why "Being repeatedly Catholic in a built-up area" isn't even a crime...

What about being repeatedly Catholic in command of a Great Frigate within 3 miles of the Scots coast?

Henri Merchand lifted his hands complimented by the ladies man who deferred to his mistress a fine lady who accepted his word of aid, and helped put a tire back on but no thank you or coin next time he must defer being a gentleman for money even a couple Louis was better than nothing. Still he learned a lesson and did a good deed perhaps someday it will pay off.

Gentleman tend to be fools around women though even if a common merchants son.

Still he had plans trading work for used clothes and scraps he could make outfits placing these on a long straight branch and ribbon it and sell clothes he makes for coin his need for his mother perhaps aiding in this, Ragman can make a decent living and his wares would be a sign of his skill. And he needed to do the legal papers so needed to focus on that this time.

Then meet his father old friend the mayor of the districts largest town and who might offer advice and maybe a contact or two.

He had two plans to earn coin for his dear mother if needed one he could join an army as a camp follower he can fix clothes and boots, repair tents he apprenticed as a tent maker and maybe do some trading in goods to the soldiers spending something for tobacco, laudanum and other things and maybe get in with others.

The other plan was to work at his current trade if it pans out, buy a good donkey and packs and make a modest living selling clothes and repaired footwear maybe other things for coinuntil his mother can have a stipend even small each month for her needs the money invested then go to the new world.

But maybe other things are also possible if the mayor can help or he finds some opportunity, he could perhaps get a reference note from the Reverend Mother at the convent and he might know of something the Church might provide some chance to work and learn new things while perhaps working in a charity house of holy brothers or some other option.

And he has that book his father left him with odd formula and writing he intended to keep it but perhaps someone might pay well for such an oddity ... he has no use for it and his mother and he needs Louis and a good sum could launch him in his business in Paris he might find a buyer at the University or perhaps a book seller.
