Could it be the Sacred Chickens of Cordoba have their Gods wrong on this occasion ?
It would seem the fair Goddess Pomona who was a goddess of fruitful abundance in ancient Roman religion and myth, often depicted as a wood Nymph, is the one who sent the "Goat" to the Legions on the Rhine. There is a grove that is sacred to her called the Pomonal, located not far from Ostia, the ancient port of Rome. Now it seems another Grove has also been found on the banks of the Rhenus, So she is known to the good men of Rome, she is the Goddess of fruit trees, gardens, and orchards Her symbol was a goat’s horn filled with grain and flowers which are overflowing from it. Not known for her debauchery & drunken behaviour . So she is no where near as raucous as those naughty Bacchus followers, the Goats horn being her symbol of plenty, would tie in with the Sacred goat being used as a guide by her to direct her followers.
Admittedly the Goat led to an old man who was muttering & unintelligible, whether this had to do with him being an agent of the Gods or simply as side effect of the Cider is something that was not made clear in the Newspaper.
I guess many will see the Cider as both a blessing & a curse , Singing the Gods praises in the evenings & Cursing the side effects in the morning.
Will the goat become the mascot of one of the Rhine Legions? Earning them the name "Goat Worriers!", sorry I mean "Goat Warriors."
