"It has an estimated value of about £120."
Maybe we could have a Forum whip-round, then put in a telephone bid?
I always wondered what I was doing wrong

According to reports I read.....the book in question is rather modern for 1720 and offers strong warning's against "laying with annimals" and various other folk beliefs which may limit its popularity in Rozwi.
But could be fun if your Merchant Character even gets to own a printing press.......perhaps part of a set with Fanny Hill, The Karma Surtra & Japanese Pillow book?
Perhaps Jason knows when the other books were first in print? And if the printers got into trouble?

Fanny Hill is late 1740s but didn't last long-can't remember if it was the author or publisher who was charged with "corrupting the king's subjects" as a result; Karma Surtra, I believe the first English translation was published in the 1880s but as it was written before 200AD...well someone could translate it sooner in game. I can't recall anything about any outrage when it was translated. Afraid not heard of the Japanese Pillow Book

So......what our would be C18 porn merchant from York needs to do to make money and avoid the stocks etc is to make it either "Educational" or "Foreign".
Or even better "Foreign & Educational with Colour Plates"..............its a sure fire money spinner, vastly superior to sailing to Greenland and getting busted by the Danes as a smuggler.

Re: Naughty 1720 book for sale
Hah! Porn merchant from York. We got called that last weekend (my weekend job is working for a toy soldier trader in the wargames industry) at ROBIN show, Nottingham. That the 'glamour model' miniatures - 28mm tall, painted and displayed in a proper display case at adult's head height - were offensive and unsuitable for a show where children were in attendance. A chap went and complained to the show organisers and they had to come and tell my boss. Nothing was said about the stark-bollock-naked Ancient Greek toy soldiers! Or the miniatures from elsewhere in the show depicting mass violence, murder, theft, etc. Just our little models of women showing their breasts.
Bartholomew Yorke, Esq., will soon have constraints placed against his choices and opportunities. But I do like the idea of importing mucky books from India , and since I'd not be in the EIC. there'd be no book burning to worry about! Might annoy my patron, however.

Think if you are English and wish to trade in India you have to do it within the framework of the HEIC or you could be spending a lot of time in a Court of Law.
On the plus side the Company allowed its employee's a great deal of freedom to conduct "Private Trade". Though I suspect its Director's in London probably thought they were giving an inch and men like Clive, Raffles, etc were taking a mile when they waged what were basically "Private Wars".
Indeed for most of its History the Company made quite small profits compared to the huge fortunes its employee's racked up. As well as mucky books has Bartholomew Yorke also considered a) The Opium Trade b) "Piece" Trade (trade in silk underthings and the like for the ladies).......retire as a respected brothel owner in old London Town, establishment decked out in Indian/Eastern furnishings.....very trendy c) Privateering or Merc Hire to various Indian Princes?
