Re: Game 3
well it depends on the backing nations and whether they will put their forces where their mouths are? In Game 2 Spain had troops in England and so did a few others so it can happen....

Re: Game 3
Never mind. Not too long now, before game eight starts. Looking at the updates, all the bigger positions have gone. There looks alot of players in the game so far. Alot of the smaller nations are taken as well. So i guess the game will start closer to June, than the later date of september. Anybody heard when the game starts yet?

Re: Game 3
Working on game 3 as on holiday from 23 May for 2 weeks and need to do some ironing tomorrow night!
Morocco is resolved and Spanish units will occupy Larache this turn.
Suo is expected to be lively again this month but I now have sufficent battalions and lineships there to repulse any attack. With all that rain last month the Chinese must have a high sicklist

Re: Game 3
Reply date is 21.09.
The turn was rather quiet. This is the entry for Russia which will intersts you most:
St. Petersburg † Princess Eleanor Charlotte, the Duchess of Athlone has stepped off the English Man
O’War Princess Louisa and taken it upon herself to move into the Winter Palace. The
Russian housekeeper was not entirely sure he should allow it, but she was very insistent
that he must!
They had done the right thing, since Prince Menshikov rushed up a few minutes later
and apologised for not having meet at her on the steps of the palace.
Her Highness was certainly dressed - if not overly dressed - for the occasion, wearing
as she was a pure white silk gown embroidered with gold lace, although rather daringly
she wore her hair down. Menshikov, perhaps forgetting himself, remarked that she
would be a ‘good catch’ and ventured to offer her his hand. Smiling broadly, Princess
Eleanor accepted it and they spent the afternoon together.
On the morning he was up early, and went straight to see her again. This time the
entire day was spent by the two chatting amicably before they went for a walk.
Tsarina Anna-Marie insisted on the third day that the princess break herself away from
Menshikov and spend some time with her instead. This was managed, although
notably Eleanor seemed to be greatly missing her new male friend, and the Tsarina
and herself spoke excitedly about love and marriage for much of their time together.
Later still a ball was held, attended by fine food and drink, and dancing (Menshikov
notably not allowing any other man to dance with Princess Eleanor on pain of facing a
duel!).
The Tsarina, perhaps inspired by Princess Eleanor’s wonderful dresses, wore a gown of
particular brilliance, while one of her beautiful ladies in waiting, Princess Timofevic was
overheard saying that she intend to catch Prince Henry of England when he arrives
and marry him!
Fireworks completed the evening, silhouetting Menshikov and Eleanor as they watched
from a balcony.
Have yet a nice holiday.

Re: Game 3
I have decided to join this game again as Republic of the Americas, very interesting position.
Last time in game 3 was way back in 1720 or so as Lithuania.

Re: Game 3
Not that many. Spain, Sweden, England, France, America, Russia, Austria, Papal States, possibly still the Caliphate. Probably a few others not doing that much. My letter to Portugal went months before I got a reply, so don't know if he's just running every third turn or something.
I admit I'm considering dropping this position. A combination of not really seeing development options that interest me, and just arriving so late to the game (1736) there is a lot of position development and history that you lose.

Re: Game 3
I'm playing the Papal states and it just doesn't fit with my view of the position. Add to that, when I picked up the position in 1736, I had ZERO inventions and a military that while adequate isn't going to win any prizes so even if I wanted to I would probably just lose, and quickly!

Just to show how I am a bit strange...I find the sort of position Deacon describes as the ones that interest me but then I suspect I'm better at diplomacy than fighting
Though it does seem that the Papal States is a hard one to play, it might be my imagination but those playing it never seem to last long.

Re: Game 3
I admit that I have considered dropping out of this game after about 18 months, slowly being crushed into dust by very superior forces is only fun a little while, a major victory over the enemy would be fun of course but I just can not see it coming.

Re: Game 3
Indeed, impressive.
Though I think many of us got our turns in early, and there isn't as many active players. I'm not sure what some players even do on their turns after playing the same position for 20 years!
I was far more impressed with the turnaround on game 8 where it has a lot more active positions (well, at least it seems that way!).

Re: Game 3
Yes, I would be surprised if that turnaround can be achieved in all games, perhaps we will see faster turnaround on the "smaller" games to attract more players, giving us fast games (around 2 weeks) and a bit slower (around 3 weeks).
That could be interesting.
