In all serious, I do think it is King James' default response to a situation in which he feels slighted-he challenges them to a duel and I do wonder if he does it simply because he knows 99% would back down. It is a different negotiating tactic have to admit.

Re: Game 3
Dueling is an excommunication offense from the council of trent, and while it may not be generally enforced, the pope certainly isn't going to do it, regardless of his age and health.
I do, however, have other remedies for those who in engage in public contumacy!

Re: Game 3
King Joseph has fought the odd duel in the past; with the Stadtholder of the UDP, 3 March 1723. Still detailed in my turn notes after all these years as it is commemorated on an engraved snuff box presented by King James.
The game has been quiet for years but now in an upward cycle. I will need to write a few more letters than usual!

King James has won the Papal booby prize this turn. An excommunication for public contumacy.

So G3 can look forward to his public protestations of innocence and complaints against the nasty Pope-man?

Re: Game 3
To be fair, I think the volume of whining will go up a lot, because if they thought he was slighted by me before, I can imagine what he thinks now....
But seriously, I joined the game a couple of years ago as the Papal states. There is literally no hope for me being militarily relevant. The Italian economy is as bad as ever. I started with _no_ technological advancements. In 1736! The _only_ thing the position has going for it is the Papacy.
So I'm going to play it.
So far, I guess Richard thinks I've been doing it right, since I'm on the honour list.

I suspect the volume of his outrage will be loud enough to be heard here.

No, my father was career military (air force), but I've never been in the service.
