Should I offer to have my head cut off? Shocked
I dont think its a very historical outcome and I suspect Louis and Leopold are too old to duel with swords, they could do it with pistols. Generally the game seems to work best with historical outcomes and heads of state seemed to only lose their heads through rebellions/revolutions not peace treaties.
Anyone aware of a king/emperor losing their head as the result of a peace treaty? Anyway it seems Louis doesnt want my head now.

I'm looking for forward to the PR spin on a Catholic alliance (Hapsburgs) supporting a Protestant claimant to the English throne, now held by a Catholic King. Never forget the Hapsburgs are good - I wouldnt be surprised if they pulled it off, or even if Leopold did continue to rule effectively without a head.

    This game world is brilliant

As an outsider looking in, I have to agree that the catholic powers should be celebrating the return of a catholic monarchy in England. I think that they should have spent their efforts extracting promises from France to actually vacate England after the deed rather than actually declaring war.

But politics makes strange bedfellows, doesn't it?

I would agree that it does initially seem strange, what I think would be wrong is if there were alliances devloping which were completely different to what happened in the eighteenth century. As the alliances reflect the reality of the time, as in the War of Spanish Succession (Protestant England, Dutch, Catholic Austria and Hapsburg Spanish V a Catholic France), logically one of two things is happening. Either the game is structured so brilliantly that we follow the historical necessities or we are too influenced in looking back on history and this directs us in certain travels. The answer is probably a mixture of the two and perhaps some other factors which I havent realised.
Partly the success of the current game/wars/diplomacy is in large part because Louis is playing as the historical one did at the start of his reign, not how he did at the time of the war of the Spanish Succession because he sought compromise at that time, but who knows.
If a war between Sweden and Russia blows up as mentioned in this thread a few days earlier into a Great Northern War then this game will really take off. The Swedish campaigns were certainly memoriable. bounce

Indeed. This certainly is a game with a lot going on at once.

I think that with Marlborough suprising the world with accepting peace we could also see him agreeing American independence too. And could we then see new alliances forming? Maybe William as king of America?

Yes, there is the issue of the American colonoes, but also the crown of Scotland and Ireland. Something to think about. Jacobites as the crown in England and Williamites as the crown in Scotland. I dont think that the Act of Union has taken place in the game? king

Now there is a point, Ireland! In game terms it is considered to be unified with England and controlled by the same player...but is that right 'historically'? The Act of Union for Ireland (cf personal union) wasn't until 1800...

Ireland declared for King James several months ago. The Duke of Marlborough has accepted King James so there is no debate over who is king/ruler of England or Ireland.

I don't know what the situation is with Scotland, but from what I remember they are independent of England. It would be odd if there was not a sizeable Jacobite presence in Scotland! In the terms of his Accession, King James claimed the crowns of England, Ireland and Scotland. Historically he may now need to be crowned King of Scotland in a separate ceremony to be valid in the eyes of the people of Scotland, but that isn't France's problem - it is up to the player for King James/Duke of Marlborough.

If we're going to go with the historical model, then at this time there would not be a strong Jacobite presence in Scotland. The 1689, 1715 and 1719 uprisings were Highlands affairs really and never gained support in the Lowlands where the power and influence of Scotland lay. In each case it was only the promise of foreign aid and/or jacobite unprisings in England that made the clans that rose up, rise up.

The less said about 1708 the better, unless making French fleets follow the path of the Armada appeals Wink

Picking a fight with a bunch of Scots Covenanters......was'nt that what started the House of Stuarts problems the first time? Something about the troops not wanting to fight fellow Protestants and the Tax payers being really unwilling to fund it.

My guess is that if Scotland isn't in play, that they'll eventually roll over for King James, provided the player doesn't botch it.

I think England will have plenty of problems with the economy, the state of the army and navy, the politics at home and abroad, the people and the Americas to keep it busy though.

I would agree with Albreda, England has an up hill task to say the least. The Duke of Marlborough has decided upon a settlement, but that does not mean that the matter is closed in England. It just means that the matter moves into the next phase.
The Spanish player is now referring to this matter and related issues as the War of the English Succession and I think that is a very good term, so I think I will be using this term myself in future. jocolor

G7 - France vs. England - Page 14 Empty France V England but who won?

Post by Stuart Bailey Wed Mar 28, 2012 11:11 pm

With the France V England conflict in G7 now finished apart from the post match of briefing of the press etc I think we have two questions to consider:

    1) Who Won? My take is that England has been totally out manovered for the whole war, mostly because its former leaders had the tactical ability of a stunned bunny trapped in headlights, but is three colonies such a high price to pay to sink your major trade rivals in a war which will probably last for years? scratch

    2) Should we abandon this thread and start a couple of new ones? Propose:

    A) Anarchy in the UK - English and American Domestic Policy 1705 to date (Probably to be also known as "A case study in how to rig elections the HWIC way study" or " Who threw little jimmy in the well? drunken - How to get rid of Monarch's the Blackbeard way pirat

    B) French Policy 1648 to date ( Probably to be also known as "The Big Bads route to World Domination")

Clearly a thread for people to pay homage to the Great Kings noble efforts to spread French civilization, wine, food, dress styles and design to the world and make nasty but witty remarks about Alpine Yokels and other types who refuse to get with the message.

Perhaps the first half is over, now the teams have to play the second half.
English performance in the first half of the match has been dissapointing, the defence in particular, and I would hand it to the French that they have played well so far.

    Game Notice
Now that the next turn reply date has passed I am making this announcement to quell any more ill-informed speculation. For some time now I have struggled to find the money to pay for game turns. France is a large and complex global position and the rule changes to unlimited orders means it requires a greater financial commitment than I am able to make on a regular basis to the game. This was true even in peacetime, let alone when required to fight several enemies across 3 continents. The Spanish Empire is a similar size and has 3 Viceroys plus Flanders to help share the burden. It is ironic that although France has never been in better shape, my own personal finances are the opposite.

Although I had hoped that the end of the English war would have reduced the burden sufficiently for me to continue, last week’s budget and a MoT failure the day after removed any chance of my remaining in the game or returning for some time. This disappoints me as much as it will many of you, and I hope that a new player for France will come forward without delay.

Many nations have been surprised that France had not ended the wars sooner by crushing England and marching against Austria. For this delay and the effect this had on your own positions I apologise. You will understand now why the game seemed locked in stalemate for so long. It would not be in the interests of the game for me to cling on month after month out of loyalty to my allies, when I am unable to pay enough to get the necessary orders processed.

As luck would have it, the surprise announcement this last turn of a new player for England accepting King James makes this an ideal time to retire. The terms of France's involvement in England have already been published in the newspaper and on this forum. Until a new player for France arrives there is no reason for those terms to be altered in any way. King James should support the Duke of Marlborough and their combined armies should overcome any civilian rebellion. I hope that existing players will grant to the new player for England the customary courtesies and stop their personal and spiteful attacks on France and her allies. LGDR7 need no longer focus on me as an individual, but return to exploring the wider historical dynamics of the period. As I have stated many times LGDR is so much more than a wargame.

To those who have supported France openly or secretly throughout this time, I thank you. You are worthy winners who accept the principle that rulers should keep their word, and stand up for truth and honour. These values are eternal as is the glory you have won. You know that I would never have abandoned you willingly, how much I will miss implementing our plans and hope that any new player for France will prove worthy of his inheritance. France remains the game’s only superpower and has more than enough resources to defeat the Hapsburgs and their allies. All that is missing now is a player willing and able to use the machine I built up to its full effect.

To those who have opposed France, you may be relieved by my decision, but remember I achieved all my game objectives, frustrated yours and defeated every argument you put before me by reference to historical fact, not by relying on propaganda or denial. If there was one secret to France's success, then that was it. I know some of you don't like me, indeed some hate me (openly or secretly); you wouldn't react in such a way if you didn't know I am right. You might continue to fight on even though you have no reason to do so, but any victory you claim will be a hollow one. There is so much more I had planned to do in this game, but perhaps it is fitting that as in life we can't chose when we go. You'll miss me far more than you'll ever admit as I will miss being able to give you what you have coming.

I hope to return to a game of LGDR at some point in the future when circumstances change.

I think you will be missed by the remaining players. For better or worse, you have left a definate impression on this game.

I would just like to thank the "Real Louis" for all the time and effort he has put into G7 which seems to have made it hugely enjoyable for many and a source of deep frustration for others closer to the Action

Perhaps when real life allows he save on the Naval and Colonial problems and return to a GDR game as a Austrian?

In order to fill a huge Louis shaped hole in G7 I suggest the two Jasons apply to Richard to split the position back into the colonial/naval ministry and the Home/Army ministry. Position can not be more than 50 pages of huge detail.

Couple of small problems like a small war with whole Hapsburg family but nothing too major.
