ok, I'm definately on to a winner this time...he said foolishly...

Strasbourg...In September 1681 it was annexed by King Louis XIV of France, and this was recognized by the Treaty of Ryswick (1697).

But...in game terms in 1700 its located in "Baden"! And "Baden" itself seems to be located on the west bank of the rhine where in reality Alsace should be.

Given I'm now at war with Prussia over Strasburg Im taking an active interest!

Is anybody besides me surprised that the English are taking French prizes under letters of Marque? Did I miss some declaration of hostilities? Is it some territorial thing, ie sailing too close to English colonies? Letters of Marque against smugglers given the navigation acts?

It surprised me too...I wondered if it was a pirate ruse rather than *really* the English government...

I wondered that too. But they supposedly went to the governor to confirm the prize?! You would think he'd know if any letters of marque were out.

Perhaps a clever use of a spy to stir something up between england and france? A clever pirate and a governor who isn't keeping up with the times?

It smells funny to me.

I probably am circumnavigating the game mechanics here, but will do this in the game newspaper as well....

I can assure you is DEFINITELY is NOT the English Government. Someone is trying to stir trouble for England (as with the missing recruits) and the Royal Navy will BE taking action.

As for the Governor he will also be "questioned" about his actions
