Well, a bit of spirited play always helps
A quick advance apology to those of you who have sent me letters, afraid a bit of a complicated couple of weeks (on a personal level) and getting the return date wrong (had 30th, not 28th, in my head), I have caught myself out and not have time to write back this month

completely understand. Too many letters to write this time for me too, so I had to give some less attention than I'd like. Spent twice as long writing letters as I did writing my turn!

Only if they reduce the Price of Rum in Africa I was reading about the "Pirate Round" and it seems that in the 1690's American merchants were sending key supplies to Madagascar from ports like Boston and New York and at St Mary's on Madagascar the price of wine and rum was x15 its New York Price!
That is just day light robbery!!

Re: Game 10
I do not care if it is recommended by the Contessa di Tosca but the crew of the Belle Isle is not about to start drinking gin, palm beer or any other dodgy African rut gut!
Its French Wine, Brandy or West Indies Rum:drunken: all the way for these lads.
Do people want to see leading French Corsairs faced with a mutiney and having to make it back to France from Africa with only a small rowing boat, a compass and a small barrel of water or gin/palm beer!

Re: Game 10
Molasses based rum is pretty normal drink for pirates and scum, and hooch well if its safe and cheap and alcohol and tastes good it not likely to be unwanted by many people. I have a test industry starting.

We can also provide wine to our discerning Pirate colleagues, pressed in fair Italia & marketed under the ‘Aargh, Jim Lad’ brand for discerning connoisseurs. Rum may also be available, but only in the Kiwi format of ‘Dark & Stormy’ cocktails.

Re: Game 10
You are indeed correct, Pirates do not drink wine. Corsairs, who are definitely not Pirates, drink wine. An important distinction, that is often not fully understood. I have spoken with the marketing team, and we will launch our new red wine brand under the ‘Chateaux Neuf de Not-Pirate’ brand...

Re: Game 10
Clearly when the New England mercherts lead my Frederick Philipse (New York entrepreneur, slave dealer, and pirate broker) were sending all those shiploads of supplies inc Rum & Wine (with x15 mark up) to their agent Adam Baldridge (self style King of the Pirates) on Madagascar. What we had was a early C18 version of differential marketing and Adam only sold the wine to nice merchants and privateer's.
So at the trial of Captain Kidd rather than worrying about the legal problem of is a ship with a English Captain, Dutch Officers, mostly Muslim Crew and a Cargo owned by Persian & Armenian merchants but sailing under a French East India Company Pass means she is "French" and a legitimate prize or not. What they should have done is ask was Kidd drinking Rum or Wine at the time he plundered the Quedah Merchant?
PS Ref the evils of C18 Gin drinking I offer the Rakes Progress and other works of art by Hogarth. Actually ships crews did not suffer very much from Malaria was the mosquitos which carry it do not like flying over sea water. What ships had to worry about was the yellow fever, scurvey and Cholera which killed a 1/3 of Kidds crew at one stage ......always said drinking water is bad for you! Wine & lime juice with a spoon of sugar AKA Dr Barts is the way to go.

Well according to Captain Redbeard Rum, "drinking his own urine" was the best way to go. But then he was noted for having "few enough marbles"

Re: Game 10
Rum Ration is 0r at least still was on the books in the Army when I was serving, got a nice little ration when I was in Kosovo in 2000. Admitted it needs the temperature to have fallen below -20°C, & the CO & Chief Medical Officer of the Regiment need to agree that the issue is warranted.
Oh........ the hazards of Military life.
PS
When people talk about beer or Wine tasting of cats pi..Urine I hope they have conducted taste experiments to base their facts upon. I can certainly tell you the taste isn't one I savour, or intend to repeat drinking. But when I say it tastes of CAT I can talk from experience.

It is worth pointing out that Hogarth was not just highlighting the horrors of gin drinking. they highlighted the virtues of drinking beer. Gin Lane had a companion piece called Beer Street...gin, the evil foreign drink was corrupting the population while good British beer led to good health and wealth.

Since Gin is a Dutch Invention wonder if this means Jacobite players can claim Hogarth as one of their own?
Perhaps we would start a game of spot the hidden Jacobite?

Not sure what it means in Nottingham but in some parts of the British Isles if you say someone is "well oiled" it is a slang term for being "pissed, worse for wear, drunk as a lord, drunk as a shunk, tired, and about 500 hundred other terms for drinking too much.
Since the Romans watered down their wine.........they were probably not that "well oiled" compared to the C18 Military.

Re: Game 10
Hogarth was no Jacobite though given he was born in 1697 I think our problem could be having a Glory game lasting long enough for him to be active in it
He was a good friend of Henry Fielding (a very committed anti-Jacobite) and there are suggestions that Gin Lane/Beer Street were produced to support Fielding's efforts to get the Gin Act passed. Well, we call it the Gin Act as that was the spirit of choice of the poor but technically it was the Spirit Act-the feeling was cheap spirits effectively made people lazy and drunk. You could be drunk on beer but still go and work (roughly sums up the belief of the time).
Hogarth had some very modern views. His work "The Four Acts of Cruelty" show his hatred of abuse of animals and the fact he believed that people who abused animals would go on to do the same to humans.
I do toy with the idea of having him being born a couple of decades early and living in Edinburgh, could have some fun with him in G10

I also need to work on my general battle orders I have only two aggressive main forces the Legion and my Rangers the forces guarding my cities also need to be considered. I do plan to abuse cover, terrain and plunging archery fire until arrows are depleted then move to engage in formation. Rangers as a policing force and to guard the borders will get to known their patrol area well and the people in it, utilize information from my regional spies and have their own formation tactics likely abuse arrows a lot and mass fire then close quarters spearing the first enemy hard then move to deadly Abyssinian swords and smashing with horses I hope to raise few to an elite fully drilled force to deal with bigger threats and to back up the local units. Try to also have reserves stood down in some numbers. But I need to compensate for lack of numbers and such with drilling and not have a too big a standing armed force to mke m neutrality not convincing but big enough to prevent invasion being an easy thing to consider.
Oh what supplements would you suggest I get?
