Re: Game 8
It does seem somewhat strange which tends me to think there is more to this than meets the eye. Hopefully this will become apparent in the future.

Re: Game 8
Whats seems so interesting is That hanover wants prussia to honour an agreement which was apparently refused outright by the Emperor.(thats what i believe the Umpire is stating) If so then Hanover will certainly not have Imperial law on his side but his appeal to the Emperor now is very interesting as it might be the emperor reverses his original decision due to his apparent hump with prussia. That would please hanover and would ice the cake of a very successful diplomatic coup by hanover! Prussia will probably be very annoyed with hanover after this if he suceeds.

I must admit, being outside Europe, watching the fun and games going on inside is quite fascinating

On the subject of publishing correspondence, I guess I think that depends upon what's in it. Reading the game 7 thread, it seems that Louis is threatening one of his own allies with invasion which strikes me as dishonorable. How else to let the world know of 'dastardly' behavior than to show it to the world?

All this thrust and counter thrust keeps their eyes off what is going on around them !!! Lots of wheeler dealing by the looks of it. Now who is going to be the first to nibble at the HRE ???

Re: Game 8
A general warning from Agema. We are aware as moderators that certain persons have been using the forums' private messaging system to carry out what is very clearly in-game diplomacy. Where this turns out to be the case then in-game your honour score will take a hit. This may seem harsh but the we've already stated on the forum the rules of engagement and if players break the spirit of those rules they can't plead ignorance.
Uhm, to put it another way, you can read this so you now know that not only you know but that we know as well so pack it in!
... Please.

Re: Game 8
Already said hi on the 'introduce yourself' page but thought I'd also say hello here as well. I have just joined game 8 in a very interesting position and hope to ride the steep learning curse.
Been slowly reading this forum in order to get an overview of what's been going on and it certainly sounds an intriguing and interesting game. Tomorrow's homework it to read through the Wiki newspapers.
Right, sorry to go on... but is there any chance that everyone who replies could give one suggestion/hint too?: "What I wish I had done on my first ever turn in the game/or what I wish I hadn't done." Or just a general newbie hint.
Also, I note there is still some curiosity about whether France is active or not? well, having recently seen the available positions for the game I could probably solve this, ahem, little issue. But I don't want to break any rules so someone let me know if they want to know... and someone else let me know if it's OK to say!

Re: Game 8
We all know france is active. We're all just more than a bit curious that the player isn't apparently saying much on the world stage!
My first turn lessons/which I hads...
1) Wait 6 months before doing anything irrevocable with recruits.
2) Learn the pace of the game. It is ok to wait a month until you've had an adviser talk to you before you just go off and do it.
3) don't make any agreements without your advisers support.
4) remember that your advisers do have agendas of their own.
5) figure out who your natural allies ought to be, and introduce yourself.
6) consider talking to those who are likely to be neutral to you.

Shalom Mustang,
Another Tip;
For heavens' sake, don't do like I've done in the past, and go hog-wild & spend all of your funds......You'll end up broke as I did several times!!!!
Chagrined,
Moshe

Re: Game 8
Make it illegal for foreign powers to recruit in your lands. That way you get toyour good not other nations.
Seek out your neighbours as only through contact(diplomacy not war) will you feel who will be a boon to you and those you have to watch.
As moshe stated dont blow the bank. Investment in markets ia lways wise particularly in those that you are not likely to war in!
Go to the trouble of looking up the historical facts of your state/leaders etc as it can pay dividends.
Lastly good luck and keep your powder dry.........

Yes, definitely second that about outlawing recruiting in your land.
It hurts your economy, but recruits are necessary to build a military, so if somebody comes in and hires all yours away, you can be quite put out!

Re: Game 8
Thanks again guys.
Do most countries try and keep say a million or three in credit for a rainy day or is it safe to assume most countries have a sizable - but 'workable' - debt - as in real life?
I've been reading fairly obsessively about my region. Extremely interesting actually. Lol today I even found a 12,000 page PDF online listing the historical accounts, trade partners and important resources of the major countries in the world... I take it coal isn't much use to anyone just yet in 1700 though. Shame!

Re: Game 8
currency varies by country. Everything is done in reference to british pounds, but most countries currency is 10x to 1 pound.
So if you're asking if you save 100k to 300K, I think that is probably right, but for a small country, what can you do with the money?
Look at your plan and figure out if there is actually anything you can do with the saved money? Else, you might want to invest it.

Another tip to add to Deacon's list:
7) write to those who are hostile towards you.
In some games a change of player can bring about peace or the resolution of long standing differences. It doesn't matter whether you are personally at war or whether you are considered an ally of someone who is. Unless a player joins with the intention of continuing an existing war, it surely makes sense to try and get on with everyone.

I think one larger nation in eastern europe was not ruled the last turns. But this country is difficult to reign. And i mean not Russia.

Yeah Frank is getting warmer!
It's not a 'big' nation, as such, but it's certainly not listed among the smaller nations that are mentioned in the guides as good for newer players.
All will be revealed soon no doubt - but sincere thanks to everyone that has offered help. Really appreciate it. And, as Frank hints, I think I will need it!

Re: Game 8
Well your country saves Europe from the Turkish hordes 17 years ago. So we Europeans are all thankful that your country is played again. Especially me.
